Hi,

I am a high handicapper; play around 100, although go to low nineties some times, and break into nineties once in a blue moon.

My height is 5'4" and the wrist to ground distance is 27-28 inches.

The length of my driver shaft is 43 inch!  (Four iron is standard 36 inch. Other irons are proportionate, I guess.)

Whenever I am a bit rusty, my drive goes a bit awry. And I think that the shaft length is one of the reasons. I choke down quite a bit, but still it perhaps lingers in my mind. Have same problem with 3 wood from the fairway as well, but not with 19 degree rescue which is probably an inch shorter than 3 wood. Although I hit the 3 wood quite ok last saturday.

Should I cut the driver shaft? How much? Should I change other shafts too?

Opinions/ tips please.

Thanks,

Welcome to the forum @subirnag ford it, get a fitting by a good local fitter.  They will optimize the shaft length for you and even fit the best shaft.  The one you have may be fine.

when i get a little out of control with my driver, i choke down a touch to gain some control.  i am 5'8 though.

may be worth a shot but a fitting would be even better.

While I am not long, I am usually straight with my driver.  Late last year I could not make good contact with my driver.  I took my old Tour Edge Exotics, and cut 2 inches off the shaft.  I was making contact and was hitting straight again.  I only lost about 10 yards.  Used it for a few months and went back to my Cobra Amp Cell and am hitting it straight now.

This may be of help and then again it may be all wrong for you. But what it's showing is that proper fitting is a must.

I'm 6'. The stock length of the Big Bertha is 45.5". I cut it to just under 44.5". Better control. No loss of distance.

I'd suggest getting a roll of electrical tape and putting a 1/8" thick wrap on the grip at the length you think you want it just to see. It will remind you where to grip the club. The tape is removable. Once the shaft is cut, it is cut.

Another thing: I bought a Cobra Bio Cell 3-4 FW and it's 43.75" long. I set the loft for 13.5 degrees and it's essentially my short driver for tight fairways. I never hit this off the deck. I have a strong 5W for that.
