Hey guys. I started playing golf about a year ago. I enjoy it and I am trying to get better. I hit the ball well with a driver, but in order for me to hit it well I have to literally twist the club towards me (closed - i am a righty). If I just bring the club straight back, I either top it and slice it terribly. Usually both. I am not twisting the club closed during the swing I am literally twisting the club closed before I even swing and then swinging. I also do this with my woods and hybrids. I get great results and I hit the ball well when I do this with these clubs. When I don't, I top it or slice it as I mentioned above. With my irons, I don't tend to do this... but I also don't hit my irons very well. It started because for some reason my natural tendency was to twist the club before a swing, especially with the driver. I noticed this, and it works. Bringing the club straight back without twisting it closed just doesn't work. Has anyone ever seen this? I am just wondering why I have to do this. Thanks!

If you need to twist the club into a closed position to hit the ball you are definitely compensating for some fault in your swing but without seeing your swing on video anyone would just be guessing. My advice without seeing your swing video would be to just stop twisting the club and accept the results. If you keeping practicing you will figure out how to hit the ball without twisting the club. You don't want this band-aid to develop into a habit.

I was in the same boat after taking a hiatus from the game. Went to get a few lessons to straighten my drive and continued to practice on my own. Best advice I ever received was rather than buying new clubs first take about $1k and get some quality lessons and then decide if it was the clubs or the user; most of the time it is the user.

Define "working". Sure it may work alright for your current skill level but if you want to really improve you'll need to work on the mechanics of the swing first. Results will come later. If you get too caught up with the ball's flight at this stage in your games development you are going to ingrain bad habits. Sometimes you need to take a step backward to take those two steps forwards.

I hear ya. But im driving the ball straight probably 250 yards by doing this. But i understand what you are saying.

There are two possibilities I can come up with based on this statement.

1. We have a saying "Feel ain't real", meaning that perhaps it feels like you are twisting the club closed but in reality isn't as extreme as you're perceiving it to be. The way our brains work requires us to make moves that seem awkward and exaggerated in order to make small changes.

2. You're dismissing your misses and not hitting that straight 250 shot nearly as often as you might believe.

I am playing right now and im just bringing the club straight back. It works well with irons and wedges. I am making good contact with woods and my driver but each shot has a nasty hook to the right. I just gotta figure that out

    • Is it? I bought the Stack radar to replace my PRGR based on what Stack told me! When I am swinging for speed, the PRGR would miss 50%-80% of my backswings due to a higher speed. The stack seldom misses those- at least for me.
    • As an analyst by nature, I would like to compare the scores under both systems. It is something we can easily do if we have the data. I actually thought the new system was less fair to those whose game was on the decline - like mine! Old: Best 10 of last 20 scores with the .96 multiplier. Course handicap excluded course rating and overall par. New: Best 8/20. Course handicap includes course rating -par. My understanding is Stableford caps scores at Net double bogey like stroke play. If so, handicap should be slower to rise because you are only using 8 versus 10 scores. If I am missing something, I am curious enough to  want to understand what that may be. My home course tees that I play are 72.1/154 now. My best score out here is 82. When my game started to decline, my handicap didn’t budge for 13 rounds because of good scores in my first 8! I know I am an anomaly but my handicap has increased almost 80% in the past few years (with only a few rounds this year). For a few months I knew I was losing every bet because my game was nowhere near my handicap. I suspect I have steamrolled a few nuances but that shouldn’t matter much. When I have modeled this with someone playing the same tees and course, one good round, or return to form, will immediately reduce the handicap by some amount.
