Okay here i go;
Im nearly 15 years old, 135pounds, and am strong. I have around an 80mph swing with driver. This season i really got into golf and really enjoyed it. I have been playing since i was around 10 but never loved it as much as i do now. Ive been playing with i guess wal-mart clubs for 2 years. The other day i shot 49 on a difficult 9 hole par 36 good??? It was really windy and narrow fairways.
This season im going to buy new clubs ive been saving up and doing some small jobs out and around;
Irons- Nickent 3dx cavity backs.
So now here come my questions. Do you think those irons will work well for me, i tried them out at golf town, and the guy said i should get steel shafts??? Since im growing and becoming more strong. I liked the feel of the face but wasn't so sure about the steel shafts is this somehting you get used to???? I was initally going to buy the adams golf idea a2 os, bit i didn't like the irons from 5 and up.
For driver here is what im thinking, i am a consistent slice (tried so many things to fix it) but slice is only with driver. Im thinking of;
Nickent 3dx square (apparently it's hard to not make the ball fly straight, i like the sound of that)
Ping g5 ( i tried this and seem to hit it fairly straight on one of those range simulatours)
Nike Sasquatch (the triangular one, i tried square one and didn't like it, i am yet to try the triangular one but i am told it hits it straight???)
I may buy a fairway wood later on but for right now i don't think so. I currently have a 56 degree cleavland cg12 which i quite like.
For putters is the rifle guerin rife barbados a good putter? Im looking to spend around 125-200$ on a putter.
So i hope you guys can help me out.
Thanks a lot,
Thomas

Honestly, you're going to be 18 soon, I would stick with the walmart brand and if anything have them sized by your golf town place.. Get a nice bag with some nice towels, a nice appeal, like a hate and sun glasses (If you were them) maybe go ahead and spend some money on a driver or putter. But I wouldn't go spend the money on new clubs right now, you are still learning so much each and every hole. Plus you're growing at a rapid pace.

Remember you will be just as good with those walmart brands as any other iron out there atleast for now..

Okay here i go;

idk about the irons specifically as i've never tried them, but yes. steel shafts. they will be much more consistent than graphite shafts and you don't need the softer feel of graphite shafts as you don't have any joint problems or anything i assume.

if you have a consistent slice, i bet you will slice all drivers, just some worse than others. take a few lessons is my best advice. and yes i've heard good things about that rife

hey were in the exact same boat, i'm 15 with a 80mph swing speed w/ driver, and blue light special clubs, and shoot about the same score. I plan to play for my HS golf team and if i make it my dad will take me to get fitted for all new clubs then by a professional clubmaker(golf team starts in fall). As for steel, the man told me the same thing, i will grow into it as i get stronger, and steel will last me for a long time. As for equipment Irons- i would look into Taylormade RAC OS 2. This is what i am getting, they are game - improvement irons and the really nice thing about them is they will fit your game untill you break into the single digit handicap area(then you should problably look for some player's irons). As for putters, don't worry about what anyone else says is good, in fact don't take any suggestions from anyone else, just use every model in the store for a while and choose the one you like. The thing about putters is they are not associated with a certain skill level, etc, its just about what you want. I would advise you to pick the one you truly like the most. One more tip - for a driver, make sure you get one with at least 12 degrees of loft.

Cool yah i made the golf team was in three tournaments. Came third in one. I look at those irons, and yah ill get at least a 11degree loft in driver.

yeah mine starts in fall so i haven't had the chance yet but i'll problably make it.

yeah or 10.5 i'm not 100% sure you should check with the associate because if your playing often you will problably start speeding up the swing as you get stronger and get better

Dang, I feel strong for a 15 yr old. My swing speed is 102 mph. But I guess I have played longer then you have tmoult.

Look into the Nike Slingshots, they are great clubs but are ugly.

Get a driver with 12-13˚ of loft.

Can any one else give me some feedback?

Sure.

Okay here i go;

49 is a good score for nine holes, yes. Try "giving" yourself the handicap strokes you'd get vs. a scratch golfer, and what you'd have to shoot for a net-par. That's one way to determine a 'good score'. But don't determine it until afterwards! No sense thinking of a score during the round.

This season im going to buy new clubs ive been saving up and doing some small jobs out and around;

Any particular reason that you want new clubs right now? Is there something wrong with the clubs you have at the moment?

Irons- Nickent 3dx cavity backs.

I don't know about the clubs themselves, but I love cavity backs. I've gotten stronger (+20 lbs, mostly muscle) since I got my steel-shafted irons, and it worked well. And if you're on a budget, steel is less expensive (I think).

For driver here is what im thinking, i am a consistent slice (tried so many things to fix it) but slice is only with driver. Im thinking of;

Have you gone for a lesson, gotten your grip and stance checked? It's a lot cheaper than a new driver.

Ping g5 ( i tried this and seem to hit it fairly straight on one of those range simulatours)

While it is certainly the case that newer drivers hit straighter than older ones, you still need to hit the club and line it up right: otherwise you can hit it straight into the rough. Or into the trees. Get a good grip, stance, and swing before worrying about the newest and best. But unless your driver is over 5 years old, you might not need a new one quite yet.

(And last year's models, used, are probably far cheaper. If you're on a budget and know your specs, this can be a good option. My view is that players of our skill level don't need the newest driver; last year's tech is just fine, and will be for a few years. And there are plenty of people who think they can buy game that they'll sell back last year's perfectly good model, and you can get it cheap.
I may buy a fairway wood later on but for right now i don't think so. I currently have a 56 degree cleavland cg12 which i quite like.

Please tell me it isn't a 56-degree fairway wood.

My opinion is that I'm able to hit a fairway wood now because I was hitting hybrids for a while. Get a fairway wood when you feel you need it to close a distance gap that you need, not because it's another club to have in the bag.
For putters is the rifle guerin rife barbados a good putter? Im looking to spend around 125-200$ on a putter.

With putters, the roll, look and the feel are

the key features. In short, my suggestion is not to get fully new clubs at the moment, especially if you're on a budget. If you want a step up from the Wal-Mart clubs (and I don't know anything about WM's clubs), consider used if they match your specs. Find out if you need regular or stiff shafts (80mph, I'm betting regular is just fine), extra long or extra short, etc. When I started, I bought new irons -- (a) I didn't know better (b) I got a good deal [about what a used set would cost me] and (c) it turned out OK. They're generic brand, but they work just fine. My driver, woods, hybrids, putter, and wedges are all used from a golf shop around here. Find out if one near you has a good return policy - $X$ many days 100% money back in store credit is optimal, I feel - and go for that.

hey man i started golf around the same time as you and have experienced much of what you are currently going through. a 49 for 9 holes will most likely land you a spot on ur JV golf team in HS depending on the strength of the program. even though some people disagree, clubs do make a difference. its not worth fitting for clubs right now because your body is changing literally by the day.
i started with taylormade rac os2s and they helped my came tremendously. the first day i got them i shot a 101.. they helped bring my score down to the 70s over the course of a few years however (with some lessons of course). if u want i could sell these to you for cheap with anything else you would need (driver, bag, and whatnot). i have an r7 but it may be a little to stiff for you though.

let me know if your interested...good luck!

To answer shindig, the problem is my clubs are too short and im not going to reshaft them. As for driver it has too dents in from the first time i tried to hit. Ive improved alot since then. And yes it's a fifty six degree sand wedge. Those nickent 3dx irons are also a good price, as is the nickent 3dx square driver.

For irons I would say ping eye 2's, they are some of the best irons still today and they are pretty dang old. You can get then between 100 and 400 on ebay. As for the driver I would say get an r7, you can get them for around 100-150 on ebay. I would get a couple hybrids and I would go with the nickent 3dx, they are about 20-50 on ebay. Your putter is a great putter. Whatever feels best I would go for. Those are just my suggestions.

BTW I'm fourteen and I started golf this year. I'm very serious in it, and I have had millions of lessons for free with a friend of mines dad. Him and the son are both very good golfers and win many tournaments. Earlier this year I went to my homecourse and shot a 35 and par was 36. That goes to show you how much help lessons are, I would also say get some lessons, and wait a year to get the clubs.

O And those are the clubs I plan on getting with cleveland hibore fairway woods

slicing is mainly swing flaw. doesn't have a whole lot to do with the club you use. you need to fix your swing by taking some lessons before you get any new clubs. that's what i would do at least.

    • Day 444 - 2025-12-18 Light day of hotel room work. GEARS Summit v2.0 today. Good day.
    • Day 38 (18 Dec 25) - got out in the backyard with grandson this afternoon.  We got into a little game of pitching the ball from about 25yds to a target point just off the asphalt lane behind the backyard.  Goal - just clear it with a quick hop and stop.  Focused on using the wedge swing motion I was talking with the course pro yesterday….smooth and thru just bruising the grass.  In addition to a concentrated focus on technique, it also called for a quiet mind locked in on target point.  Rehearsed this with both the 50° and 55° wedges.
    • I listened to the Shaun Webb one about the swing coach app. Sounds like a great thing and will (hopefully) be very useful for me. I do think the hosts are underestimating where AI could be in a few years. Right now it's just regurgitating stuff that it has been told or it has scrubbed from somewhere else and a human guiding things will be quite a lot more helpful than just the AI, but it's going to keep developing and it will reach the stage where it's figuring this stuff out on its own. Time will come when it will have you do a TPI style screen and take various height/arm length/leg length etc. measurements, have you tell it some history and your time constraints and goals and what not and it will watch a video of your swing face on and DTL and it will know exactly what you need to work on.
    • I found it entertaining, but the announcing was lousy.  How did the measuring on the final shot start with Rory being closer and being told he won, and then with no explanation it turns out Scottie won?  Weird.
    • Day 128 12-18 Worked on rotation and getting to lead side. Still working on the flow feeling while doing that. Recorded swings.
