I've got a couple of ferrules come loose on my new callaway xr irons and the local store said they'd have to remove the head to fix them but if there was a weight in the head this would have to be taken out. Anyone know if this is the case, why this would be and whether I'd feel a difference in the clubs?

Ferrels are only held on by friction and sometimes excess epoxy... If they are too loose just glue them down yourself.

I tried the hot water method just now. Although I've managed to get it flush again I gave it a quick tug to see how firm it was and it slipped down again. I reheated the ferrule and pressed it in again. Guessing that forcing it with your hand would make it slip anyway?

Be careful using "hot water" not only will it cause the plastic ferrule's to swell, it could break the epoxy resin which holds the club head to the shaft. Next, the heads could go flying off !!!

Some ferrule's do seat into the top of the hosel, most are flush.

As mentioned above by Nick, simply apply a small amount of epoxy on top of the club hosel. Then push the ferrule back down to the club head.

Wipe off any excess, allow drying/curing and they should stay in place.

Yes the club head can be removed if new ferrules are required for repair.

Bummer it happens, but it's your choice, send them back for warranties and be without, or make the easy repairs yourself.

Sorry I meant to say that I tried it on my old iron first incase any damage was caused. I was worried I might damage the new one. It seemed to stay in place but could a forceful tug pull it back out or would the heat make it swell in place?

Shaft diameter vary, some are tapered and others a called parallel.

Ferrules are made for specific sizes.

If the shaft is tapered and the ferrule is pushed to high up the shaft, they will stretch.

They are a soft plastic and swell when heated.

As I mentioned, heat will also cause club head problems, beware.

Best to not heat them, they can be pressed back down easily.
