Hi. I'm new here. I haven't played much in the last 15 years and am getting back into it. My clubs are 30 years old and were custom fitted to me when I got them. I still use Persimmons woods. I just pulled the plug in a new set of Callaway XR irons and a driver. I'm big so the clubs had to be special made. I guess I am wondering what to expect when I start hitting these clubs. Sorry if this is too general of a question. I can't wait to get them and try en. Thanks.

As you probably noticed, the face on your new driver is nearly the size of a cantaloupe!  Tee it high, (1/2 of ball above topline of driver head) and wail away.  Also note that the sweet spot on your new driver is likely higher on the clubface than you think.  It should launch the ball nice and high.  If it's adjustable, definitely play around with the adjustment features until you feel it's optimized for flight and distance.

Enjoy your new clubs!

Welcome to the forum. You will find differences, but you will also find they are more forgiving. On off center hits, you will not lose as much distance. The driver will help launch the ball higher with less spin and give you more distance. It will take a few round to get used to, but you will like them.

Thanks. I think they should arrive this week. Really curious to see how they feel. My current clubs are basically old blades. The sweet spot is really small and I don't find it very much. Made the game not much fun. I'm sure I'll have some horrible rounds. But in the end I am hoping I get a little better to where it is fun.

One of the things you will have to do is "retrain your eye" for the set-up of your new clubs.

I played with some very good cavity-back component irons - custom fit - from 1994-2008. When I switched to the irons I use now (Callaway X20 Tours), I found I was missing a lot of shots to the left.

What got me stratghtened out was checking my set-up on a floor with square tiles on it. It turns out the Callaways had less offset than my old irons, and what looked like "square" head alignment to me was actually a degree or two closed.  So, I had to learn what square looked like with the new irons.

You might try this with all your new clubs so you know what the new square looks like.

I got to hit the new clubs yesterday in a scramble. I really like them. I literally got the clubs 15 minutes before we started so I had no time to hit anything on the range. It took me a while to figure out the driver. I seemed to hit the irons pretty decent for the first time out. Looked like I had to Go a club higher for most shots but I could not believe the difference in feel of these irons. My old irons gave me a lot of feedback if I mis hit. The new clubs felt surprisingly consistent no matter how I hit the shot. I got some work to do but overall I was very happy. The distance difference with the new driver is ridiculous. I leaned on a few towards the end of the scramble and hit some drives close to 300 yards. Overall very happy.

Welcome to the site!  You picked some good irons and driver that are forgiving so you should see an improvement over your 30 year old set in terms of distance and forgiveness.

Well I've played about 4-5 rounds with the new clubs. Really like them. Starting to figure out the driver. Last round I was able to hit several drives in the 300 yard range. I am truly amazed how forgiving the irons are. The ball really flies off of them and even misfits feel very solid. I am still working on the direction of the irons but am happy with the distance they are giving me. I have had to go up as many as 2 clubs on some iron shots. Playing again on Thursday. Can't wait. Awesome clubs!
