I got offered a deal a couple of years ago on a relatively unused set of AP2 710's.

I like the clubs but feel I should be using stiff shafts as opposed to regular.

Joined here as I know next to nothing about equipment and clubs as I generally just work around my budget.

Should I be looking at a completely new set or just to buy shafts to use with my current clubs?

Welcome to the site. What shafts to the AP2s have and what shafts are you using currently? Each manufacturer differs in what they call stiff, reg etc. Even within a company, the flex can vary. As shafts get lighter, the flex shifts. Example: True Temper Dynamic Gold Regular and Dynamic Gold SL Stiff are very close in flex. The SL is lighter.

What is your driver or 7 iron distance?

I believe I have the Dynamic Gold Regular shafts but will have to double check

They are heavier than most newer metal shafts and are lower launching, so they would be stiffer than some lighter stiff shafts.  They will launch slightly higher than the stiff version of Dynamic Gold, but are lower launching than many other shafts.  If your previous set was DG, you may notice a difference. But I would recommend you play with them for a while and see how you like them.  You can always change the shafts later.

The heads are very good.  The chart below shows how Dynamic Gold, DG super light, Project X and KBS shafts compare.

What is the 7 iron loft?

How often do you usually change equipment?

If you are satisfied with the trajectory and no directional issues, I would probably leave as and get fitted next time you upgrade. If you plan to keep the irons a few more years, and you are unhappy with trajectory, it might be worth investigating, but reshafting with higher performance shafts also means regripping, and the combination plus labor will knock a dent in the price of newer irons.

In the US, it would probably be around $30-40 or more per club. Of course new AP's are around $140 per club, but street price is a little less. If you sell yours that plus what you save on the shaft upgrade puts you close to halfway. On the other hand, if you are about to regrip anyway, the marginal cost for the shaft is a little less.

Sorry, you were probably seeking a technical answer. For me, if I was generally satisfied with the ball flight, the question in this case would be more financial than technical.

They (Dynamic Golds) are heavier than most newer metal shafts and are lower launching, so they would be stiffer than some lighter stiff shafts.

The Frequency Coefficient Matching measures (FCM figures in chart above) allow one to compare relative stiffness of shafts from different models and manufacturers.

The overall stiffness of a shaft is measured by the FCM. Although one of the heaviest lines of shafts, the DGs actually rate as below average in stiffness. This can be confusing, because DGs have stiff tips and - as boogie said -  they are heavier than most shafts.

The DG R300 has FCM = 4.8, whereas the Project X 5.0 (billed as the R flex) has FCM = 5.5. But, the R300 weighs in at 127 grams uncut, while the PX 5.0 is constant weight at 115 grams (prior to butt-trimming).

    • Good advice. In general, you want to take whatever weight you are lifting to a couple of reps before failure, for muscle growth. There are other tactics for PT related stuff. I would trust your PT person.  For muscle growth, you can go like 30 reps to failure. It is tougher to gauge. Also, it takes 2x as long to do the same number of working sets per week if you are doing 15 instead. It is way less efficient, but your case is special because of the injury/aggravation to the hip. 
    • Several years ago I got paired with a twosome of golfers, one of which had a maybe 5-year-old son with him. The kid had a putter and a 7i with him, and on some holes he would drop a ball near the green, chip on, and putt. If the kid started to get distracted, the dad would ask, "Do you need to rest?" The kid would nod yes, and then take his dad's seat riding in the cart for a couple of holes. It was a slow day, and the kid was polite and friendly. We got through 18 just fine. (If it had been a crowded course day, I'm sure it would have been less pleasant.)
    • Caution for the seniors on weight training: Listen to your body. (I'm 75) I got a recent session with an orthopedist after a training-related injury. I put too much weight on a new resistance machine at the gym and ended up with bursitis in my left hip. Of course, it's the hip I dislocated back in 2023. I have my first physical therapy session tomorrow. I remarked that some days I can do 45 lbs. chest press - two sets - without much effort. But other days it drops down to 30 (😩) with just one set. (Complicating factor: I had digestive problems in this fall and lost about 20 lbs., with slip in muscle tone.) Orthopedist said that I want to feel some resistence, but that I should go with lots of reps with manageable weights rather than trying to set some sort of lift-pound record. I'm sure I'll get some refinements on lifting during tomorrow's PT.
