I am in the market for some new irons and am having trouble finding a place to get fit. I have a Golfsmith and a PGA superstore around me, but that's about it. Anybody have an idea where would be better to go? I live around 2 hours from the Dallas area.

Overall I prefer PGA Tour Superstore over Golfsmith but the quality of the employees varies from store to store so you might want to visit both and see which one you like better.

It all depends on your experiences buying clubs. Once you have gone through a full and decent fitting, you can tell in 5 minutes whether the fitters at a new shop know what they're doing.

Overall, shops like Golfsmith and Golf Galaxy have fitters and clubsmiths with solid skills. Individual stores, however, can hit rough spots where they're "in between" really good fitters.

If you're short on experience in getting fitted, walk around the store and look on the walls. If you see framed completion diplomas for several industry fitting and OEM schools, chances are the people in the shop know their stuff.

Or, ask your friends who does good fittings. On occasion you'll find an excellent fitter or clubsmith who is old school - the person learned OJT, and worked individually to hone the skills.

I can only relate my own experience, but the guy I worked with at Golfsmith was very good.  He is a PGA instructor and certified clubfitter, and worked with me for far longer than the 45 minutes that my free fitting would normally entail.  When spending $200 or more, the 45 minute mid range fitting is free, and they pretty much covered all of the bases with me.  I was pleased with the way he worked with me, and I'm very happy with the custom fitted clubs that resulted from the session.
