Did a Hotstix fitting at my local pro shop. After hitting several of the Hotstix best suggestions I fell in love with Mizuno MX25, TT DG SL Shafts S300 Flex. The guy doing the fitting said that if I wanted to get the MAX out of my new clubs I should consider a shaft upgrade. The Hotstix program suggested TT Black Gold shafts would be a excellant upgrade. My new irons were reshafted w/ Black Gold shafts but instead of the S flex they used R flex shafts. The fitter says that in order to obtain my optimum FREQ of 4.3 they had to use softer shafts and shorten them to achieve this FREQ. By starting with S flex shafts they could not achieve this FREQ. Does this make sense to anyone or did I just get a set of shafts they had in stock? At this point in time I still have options. Any and all help would be greatly appreciated.

Don't ever be concerned about the flex rating on a shaft. I've seen way too many mislabeled shafts in my life. If you worked with Hotstix, and they said to use R flex cut to a certain length to get the correct frequency, then believe it. If it still bothers you, remove the shaft bands. In my experience, a good fitting program that merits out your requirements is much better than using the stock shafts.

Good job on doing the clubfitting, you have taken a step that most people incorrectly feel is over rated, you made a good choice.

I wouldn't worry about the flex either... but I'm curious why they replaced a shaft that weighs 106 grams with one that weighs 127-112 grams.

From the sounds of it he didn't get fit at Hotstix in Scottsdale, rather a shop that licensed the software. Rangeound, is this correct?

Hi RangeHound, shafts are the 'engine' of the clubs so yes it matters. On the Rifle scale a Dynamic Gold S300 would be a 5.75. So if the program suggested a flex of 4.3 then yes a regular flex would be needed to achieve that number.

I have some more questions if you wouldn't mind? What clubs and shafts are you currently using and what are you looking to change? What did the fitter say about the recommendation? Are these clubs going to be standard length?

Are these clubs going to be standard length?

That was my first question - what did the fitter mean by "shorten them"? Shorten them to less than standard length? How tall are you, just to get a ballpark idea? If you say 6'5" I'm going to say something fishy's going on...

First thanks for your replies?
  • Here are some answers.
  • This was done at a local Hotstix licensee
  • From my own measurements the clubs are now at standard length so they are not shorter than standard.
  • I am 5'10" so standard length shafts would be correct.
  • As for my old clubs I have set of Ping Zing 2's. I like them however I know technology has passed them up. I had the opportunity to hit a set of Mizunos and liked the feel of the forged irons. Was looking for a step up in club but knew I wasn't ready for blades.
  • Just to clearify the Hotstix program suggested a club build frequency of 4.3 and build CPM of 290.
  • Was looking to end up with a little lower ball flight. If not lower just a more pentrating ball flight. Get tired of nice shots going out and just dying in the wind.

If you have more question please ask!!!

    • Temporary grandstands are in the general area though, a bunker is not so your relief options are different.  I don't really understand what is so difficult about this.  You should be more upset with whoever organizes/runs your league for not implementing GUR, not the rule itself. Especially since this is a league and if it's at the same course every time it's likely that this isn't the first time the bunker has filled up completely with water.
    • Not sure if this is best to post here or start a new thread but I'm curious which stats you pay most attention to/how you utilize Shot Scope's data/charts to drive your improvement/practice?   I have 81 holes in Shot Scope now so starting to get a decent sample size of data about my game. I can obviously see the strokes gained numbers but I'm not quite sure where to go from there in terms of how to assess what specifically I need to work on.  Obviously it's approaches and short game for me, but when I go into those tabs on the left for those specific areas, I'm not quite sure how to use the information to make it actionable in my practice.
    • I guess we’re kind of getting into semantics here, but you state “trading a bunker lie for a grass lie”. I would argue that a bunker under water is no longer a bunker. It is basically a small pond where there isn’t supposed to be one. The course has an unplayable condition due to weather and poor maintenance. Hitting a ball out of three inches of water is not a realistic option any more than hitting through a temporary grandstand is. Just my opinion.
    • So here’s the thing, you’ve treated the bunker as if it were GUR, which would actually be the appropriate course of action except you and your playing partners are not authorized to determine that for yourselves. The Committee in this case would be the golf course and in an ideal world, they would have handled their responsibilities and told you at the beginning of the round that X bunkers are under water, treat them as GUR. I’m actually ok with how you handled the situation in a casual round TBH but this is the rules forum and you asked about a rules clarification so there’s a specific procedure for that. As for your proposed rule, I don’t agree with the logic at all for the reason I outlined in my previous post. You are trading a bunker lie for a lie in grass for no penalty. And also, there are already rules in place that address the exact situation you found yourself in, including relief options for if the bunker was appropriately marked as GUR or not.
    • Someone asked would pros accept someone else keeping score. It’s done in every other sport. That’s what scorekeepers are for. It’s an antiquated rule. It’s fine for non-professionals.  I feel like there is a lot of resistance to rule in golf, as if these rules were brought down on stone tablets by Moses.
