The game of golf needs to "evolve". So I am looking for input from the Sand Trap members to help me create a viable alternative to USGA golf. I am looking for your input criticisms, modifications, advice or alterations.

The ultimate goal is to create an alternative golf game that is fun, fast, and plays real shots on a real golf course. Do not compare to USGA golf -- this is supposed to be different.

Objectives

1. 1. Play 6 holes in 60 minutes or less; faster game

2. 2. Make a golf game that is easier and more accessible for ALL golfers

3. 3. Make a golf game that is different but similar to USGA Golf, yet fun for everyone and playable on existing courses without course modifications

4. 4. Increase participation, lower price (1/3rd of cost) , less time, more family oriented

5. 5. Increase golf course revenue (split 18 hole course into 3 six hole courses) e.g. during  evening tee times

6. 6. Develop skills for USGA golf

“Speedy” Golf Rules

1. 1. Play from most forward set of tees

2. 2. With any Ball in play through the green  (except green side bunker) – you may Lift at any point and place in fairway no closer to hole – 1 stroke penalty

3. 3. With any Ball in play – green side bunker -- lift from bunker and place the ball within 3 steps of bunker no closer to hole– 1 stroke penalty -- may play from that location or choose to then apply Rule 1 and play from fairway no closer to hole which would add 1 more penalty stroke

4. 4. Water hazard /out of bounds / lost ball  --  lift and place the ball within 3 steps no closer to hole – 1 stroke penalty – may play from that location or choose to then apply Rule 1 and play from fairway no closer to hole which would add 1 more penalty stroke

5. 5. Green – all balls within 3 feet of hole are conceded 1 putts

6. 6. Green – 2 putt maximum – if you are not within 3 feet after 2 putts –  add 2 stroke penalty and your are done

7. 7. 2 players may play at same time so long as it is safe (including on the tee and green) – if balls collide on green surface then replace both balls at point of contact – if balls collide in air play as found

8. 8. Maximum time to execute any shot after arriving at ball is 15 seconds -- violation = 1 stroke penalty – counting out loud by other players is permitted

9. Game is automatically over at 60 minutes no matter where you are on the course.

1.      1. Play 6 holes in 60 minutes or less; faster game That's not even that fast

2.      2. Make a golf game that is easier and more accessible for ALL golfers

5.     5.  Increase golf course revenue (split 18 hole course into 3 six hole courses) e.g. during  evening tee times Makes no sense, people playing a full 18 would pay 3x as much anyway.

6.     6.  Develop skills for USGA golf

“Speedy” Golf Rules

1.    1.   Play from most forward set of tees

2.     2.  With any Ball in play through the green  (except green side bunker) – you may Lift at any point and place in fairway no closer to hole – 1 stroke penalty Only a good option if you stuck in lie that requires you to punch out sideways

3.      3. With any Ball in play – green side bunker -- lift from bunker and place the ball within 3 steps of bunker no closer to hole– 1 stroke penalty -- may play from that location or choose to then apply Rule 1 and play from fairway no closer to hole which would add 1 more penalty stroke

6.     6. Green – 2 putt maximum – if you are not within 3 feet after 2 putts –  add 2 stroke penalty and your are done 2 stroke penalty? Good luck convincing folks that is fair.

7.      7. 2 players may play at same time so long as it is safe (including on the tee and green) – if balls collide on green surface then replace both balls at point of contact – if balls collide in air play as found

8.     8.  Maximum time to execute any shot after arriving at ball is 15 seconds -- violation = 1 stroke penalty – counting out loud by other players is permitted

9. Game is automatically over at 60 minutes no matter where you are on the course. What if you are being held up by slower players? Who is keeping track of every player's position and time? Who will be kicking people of the course?

Sorry but all you are really suggesting is different and/or more rules and regulations. I could just as easily simplify it to one rule.

1. Don't play slow.

The real problem is getting people to actually do what they are supposed to do

Well I applaud you thinking out of the box. However, I am afraid you will have an uphill battle with golf course buying into the concept, because I do not see the audience. I do agree with @SavvySwede two stroke penalty would not work ... heck people with argue for months over a 2 stroke penalty for a lost ball in regular golf. Best of luck.

I don't get the desire to keep trying to fundamentally change the game to some fast passed short outing. It's ok to not like golf. If it takes up too much time or people don't enjoy it there are plenty of other options out there.

I don't see your rules making the game any easier and it's definitely not a different game, you're just assessing less-severe penalties for dropping balls than the RoG does.

With the exception of the time limit, I don't think these rules will do anything to speed up golf.  I play as a single 99% of the time so I am almost always waiting for the people in front of me.  From my observations, the people who are really slow are doing one or both of the following:

1.  They stop golfing to talk instead of the other way around.

2.  They do not play ready golf.  They drive to one ball, let that guy hit, then drive to the next, etc. instead of dropping one guy off with a couple clubs, and driving to the next ball.  On the green, I see people standing around waiting for the guy who is away but is still raking the bunker, etc.

Without a doubt, multiple practice swings and plumb-bobbing greens contribute to slow rounds but it's really the two things above that turn a round of golf into a trail of tears.

There are golf courses across the US that offer 6- and 12-hole 'loops' for players who don't have 4 hours to play an entire round.

We'll see if this 'catches on' anywhere.

No thank you. I'll stick to golf. Likewise, I'll continue to work to educate players and courses on issues that affect pace of play and what they can do to help resolve them.

How about giving the starter and any marshall the ability to simply look at someone's swing and force them to play from a shorter tee.

Mizuno is introducing new technology with their JPX One fairway woods and drivers. The new tech for golf but used tech for Mizuno since it is found in their baseball side of the business, is Nanoalloy. Nanoalloy is a microscopic polymer layer put on the face of their titanium driver. What this layer does is change the elasticity of the driver face and increases ball speed over a larger area of the clubface. Adding a bit more elasticity with this layer, they are conserving the golf balls energy from the impact.  Due to USGA rules, this technology falls under their coating regulations. Which add a correction factor to the ball speed testing done for conforming golf clubs. This rule was introduced when Taylormade went to their carbon clubface. Which I didn't know existed.  I am sure that center strikes are at the USGA limits like all other drivers. This has my interest. I am always, "window shopping", for new golf equipment 😉
