I'm going to be looking into getting completely fitted and buying new irons next spring.  I'm a low 90s golfer right now using Taylormade Burner 2.0.  My game is improving slowly as I have only been playing for 3 years.  My question is:

What would your recommendation be for a set of irons?

I've been looking at Callaway XRs, Titleist AP1s, and Taylormade RSI 1s.  If there are other iron sets that you definitely recommend, let me know and I will make sure to test those out when I go to purchase.

This is my first time posting, so thanks for the help.

You could also try Ping G30 or the new Ping I irons, Mizuno JPX 850 or JPX EZ forged. But in all honesty, I'd try anything they have that you like the look of and is in your price range. Don't restrict yourself to just certain companies and models. If they have used clubs or new older models for sale, try those too.  Go for what you get the best numbers with.

Appreciate the info.  My neighbor talks highly about the Mizuno line of irons.  I'm probably going to check those out.  I'm not so much hooked on the look of irons as I am the performance.  I'm a coach and very competitive so I'm looking to take my game into the 80s soon.

Not for nothing but I'm using the TaylorMade Burner 2.0 irons and my handicap was able to get my handicap under 7 for a while this year. Lately my woods have been getting me in some trouble and I have ballooned back to mid 8's.

I'm with @Jeremie Boop , try anything that they have that's in your price range.  If you're not married to a specific "look", that makes your choices even wider.  I've had Mizuno irons, and loved them.  I currently play Titleist AP2s, and have friends who play AP1s, and both are good clubs.  Ping irons are great for many people.  Another big variable will be your choice of shafts, they can influence the ball flight, height, and distance.  Be open-minded, pay attention to your fitter, and to the flight of the balls.

The good news is you already have one of the best sets of irons out there for a wide range of players.  Burner 2.0's are sweet!  However, the shafts they come with are a little longer than "standard", the lie is a bit upright, and they are designed to hit the ball fairly high.  No reason you can't succeed over the long term with these.  If you want to try something else and don't mind spending the money, suit yourself, but hang onto the Burners until you are sure you have truly found a better set of tools for your game.

Of the new crop, I am most tempted by the latest Mizunos and Pings.  They will likely have shorter shafts than your Burners, and in the case of Mizuno and Titleist, flatter lie angles.  But the performance aspect is no secret, they are all $$$.

Thanks for the heads up.  I work at a golf course during the summer (I'm a teacher), so I can order anything from Callaway, Wilson, and Ping with them.  I could probably get any brand I want, but a lot depends on what they have to test in the practice facility.  I also have a cousin who is a head pro in FL who can order me Titleist or Taylormade.  Considering I'm a teacher, I will probably have to stay with those brands so that I can either get my staff discount or my cousin can get me a discount through his course.  I like having options tho.  I keep hearing a lot about Mizuno so I'm definitely interested.

I just thought of something that you might be interested in reading.  I occasionally contribute on another golf website, and they often feature comparisons of clubs.  I just checked, and they have a recent comparison of game improvement irons for 2015.

Based on my quick read, you can find good clubs from Taylor Made, Ping, Calloway, Titleist, among others.

Good idea, I would also add that looking at the list from 2014 and possibly 2013 as well. Clubs from those lists will have just about all the same technology as those on this years list, at a substantial discount most of the time.

My recommendation is that you go into the fitting with an open mind and try everything they'll throw at you to compare the results. Purchase whatever turns out to be best for you after that based on whatever metrics you're judging by.

My league partner went into an iron fitting with two or three models he was looking at.  Mizuno never crossed his mind.  He has a bag full of Mizuno irons that he hits very well.

A good launch monitor will pretty much lead you the clubs that work best ... at that given time, I guess.

    • Is it? I bought the Stack radar to replace my PRGR based on what Stack told me! When I am swinging for speed, the PRGR would miss 50%-80% of my backswings due to a higher speed. The stack seldom misses those- at least for me.
    • As an analyst by nature, I would like to compare the scores under both systems. It is something we can easily do if we have the data. I actually thought the new system was less fair to those whose game was on the decline - like mine! Old: Best 10 of last 20 scores with the .96 multiplier. Course handicap excluded course rating and overall par. New: Best 8/20. Course handicap includes course rating -par. My understanding is Stableford caps scores at Net double bogey like stroke play. If so, handicap should be slower to rise because you are only using 8 versus 10 scores. If I am missing something, I am curious enough to  want to understand what that may be. My home course tees that I play are 72.1/154 now. My best score out here is 82. When my game started to decline, my handicap didn’t budge for 13 rounds because of good scores in my first 8! I know I am an anomaly but my handicap has increased almost 80% in the past few years (with only a few rounds this year). For a few months I knew I was losing every bet because my game was nowhere near my handicap. I suspect I have steamrolled a few nuances but that shouldn’t matter much. When I have modeled this with someone playing the same tees and course, one good round, or return to form, will immediately reduce the handicap by some amount.
