im hitting wayyy too high on the face with my driver and the ball is going about 240 yards carry- with a real high ball flight (hitting relatively center of the face horizontally)

fyi my distance with my 3 wood is 250ish carry with a piercing ball flight my 7 iron is around 170 carry

i know this is caused by hitting the driver with a downward angle of attack but what does this mean regarding spin?

does this mean that im getting too much spin or too less?

is this called ballooning?

thanks

Well if you hit it really high on the face (COG of the ball lined up nearly even with the crown) the vertical gear effect can shoot the shoot the ball up almost like a pop up while still getting enough energy transfer to get the ball out there quite a bit further than a true pop-up shot.

Are you hitting it high on the face with a downward angle of attack or upward angle of attack?

If it is down then you could be skying the ball. If you are hitting up and catching the top part of the face the ball will launch a tad higher and spin a tad less. Like 1-2 degrees and 500-700 rpms less spin.

If it's downward and you hit it high on the face you can cause the ball to hit near the top of the crown producing a very high shot and very high spin.

I would post a video of your swing for further help.

hey saevel im pretty sure my AoA with the driver is downwards thus hitting too high on the face...i checked my impact marks and seems like the top 1/3rd of the golf ball would be above the crown at impact (plus, im breaking my tees)

so youre saying that its high launch with high spin? i thought that the higher you go on the clubface it reduces spin

thanks

It's higher spin because of your downward angle of attack.

Things that cause high spin rates

Golf Shafts

Downward AA

Hitting lower on clubface

Things that cause lower spin rates

Upward AA

Golf Shafts

Hitting higher on the clubface

If you are hitting near the crown of the club and skying the ball then your angle of attack is WAY to downward. This will overshadow the fact that a part of the ball even hits the face that high on the clubface.

If you have a shallower to  upward strike. If the only difference is hitting it lower on the face than hitting it higher on the face. Hitting it higher will reduce spin and increase launch angle.

    • As a supporter of the European team even though I chose to live in the US, this is kind of good news. I'm pretty close to Bethpage, but won't be going at these prices. Neither will the crazy drunk NY sports fans who would have made this a very difficult place to play as a Euro. The tickets will go to the city types who are entertaining clients and don't care about the money. Many of them are going to sit there and watch, not get all raucous. I am not dumb enough to believe that this is going to be like a Sunday afternoon stroll in the park for the Euros, but I think it will be significantly more subdued as a result of the prices. Even at $250 I would probably have been watching on the TV anyway so no real skin in the game.
