For anchored putting, these are the End Times. On January 1, the USGA's anchoring ban goes into effect. Counterbalanced putters, a legal alternative to anchored models, have become increasingly popular with both Tour players and everyday golfers.

These new designs boast heavier-than-standard clubheads with extra weight in the grip end to "counterbalance" the increased head mass. This highly effective concept increases stability during the stroke (compared with regular models), and there's no need to brace the club against your body. Counterbalanced putters come in an array of blade, midsize mallet and large mallet options.

Nike's Counterflex putter takes the counterweighting concept to the next level. Just slide a 75-gram counterweight along a 15-inch track that sits inside the shaft.

"Positioning the sliding weight above your hands creates a higher MOI and more stability, while putting the weight below the hands makes the head feel heavier," says Matt Plumb, Nike's product line manager, golf clubs. That means that the B1-01 gives you the freedom to tweak the club's balance, weighting and feel in whatever way helps you roll it better.

The Counterflex technology is also available in a mallet head (called the S1-12), and additional offerings are coming soon. Price: $230

I think the Edel following on this site has completely ruined me for putters. Every time I see new putters and their manufacturers' claims as to what their technology can do, all I can think is: but what will that do for my putting?

I have yet to try an Edel, but I agree. If you want to putt the best, getting fit is key, which is the whole basis of Edel. Build a putter to fit the player.

I do like trying out putters at the local shops though. I am convinced that they rig the floor so all putts go in. :-P

To hijack this thread a bit for another product ;)

I found that the new Ping Heavy putters are the closest to my Edel.

They have a 365-390 gram clubhead weight. You can get a grip with counterbalance. My Edel putter is 370 gram clubhead with 40 grams counterbalance.

    • Day 37: did my drill swings in the garage with foam balls for about 15 minutes. Working on getting my backswing more turned and then going from there.
    • Thanks but honestly… I don't know any other way. I don't mind being wrong so long as I know where to go from there. I don't like being wrong — I'd love to get things right (which is different than "being right"). I recommend grabbing a furniture slider or a paper plate or something, and doing something like this: First, make a swing where you let your trail foot swing out as you turn, then twist that foot back in. From DL and FO, it'll look like this: Then, during a regular backswing, try to twist your foot in slightly (demonstrated in the left image): You'll notice a crease along the trail side of your hip, your pelvis will "fold" into that thigh (internal rotation of the hip joint), and your "bits" will be squished a little between your pelvis and your thigh. Ben Hogan said once: "At the top of the back swing the groin muscle on the inside of your rt [sic] leg near your right nut will tighten," Hogan wrote. "This subtle feeling of tightness there tells you that you have made the correct move back from the ball." I don't know about that, but you will probably feel something down around that area.
    • Yep. I think it will start to feel even more athletic when we start on the downswing stuff later.  I know, it's just I want to be younger so I have more time to enjoy the changes. 🙂
    • I need to drop a couple of stone. 🙂 😛    Yep. Yeah, but in the end, it feels more athletic, like you're actually using your legs, yeah? As you know… we use the best available info we have. Like others, I was fooled a little by 2D images for awhile (moving or still). Unlike others, I've learned and grown and moved on since then, while they're still looking at their images (often from lousy camera angles).
    • Day 12 - 2025-12-31 Limited time today, and heavy rains here. 5-10 minutes of mirror work for full swing, working on trail side.
