McDowell shoots 63 to lead by one, yep these guys are good.

G-MAC ON TRACK: Graeme McDowell is playing this week with hopes of ending a disappointing year on a positive note. He’s off to a good start. McDowell fired 8-under 63 on Friday at El Camaleon Golf Club to take a one-shot lead over Derek Fathauer. McDowell is at 12-under 130 (67-63).

McDowell has just one top-10 finish in 25 worldwide starts this year. He’s fallen to 85th in the Official World Golf Ranking. A player’s fortune can change quickly when the putter is working well, though. McDowell has just 51 putts through two rounds, and has averaged 1.46 putts per green hit.

“I’m seeing the greens well, keeping this real simple,” McDowell said. He has played El Camaleon’s first hole in 3-over par – he made double-bogey Thursday after hitting his opening tee shot out-of-bounds – but has made 16 birdies and just one bogey on the other 34 holes. He made eight birdies in a 10-hole stretch on Friday (Nos. 16-18, 2-5 and 7).

McDowell, who finished 160th in last season’s FedExCup, is also playing next week’s The RSM Classic (formerly The McGladrey Classic).

“(I) came into these two weeks with a pretty relaxed attitude,” McDowell said. “The last couple days, so far, the attitude’s been good. I’ve just been out there trying to play golf and enjoy myself.”

Nice win for Graeme McDowell in the playoff.  I didn't really pay too much attention this weekend but did see that he had fallen a few shots off the lead during the middle of the fourth round yesterday.  I've always liked McDowell.  Maybe he'll call up @David in FL to celebrate!

I didn't follow it closely so why would he be glad about that?

I also didn't see what TGC called a brilliant approach shot with his 5I in the playoff.  I'm jazzed to see that later when I get home from work.

The first 3 days he played it with 2 doubles and a bogey.  Finally parred it Sunday....

Yikes.

Glad he won it.  From your write-up, he seems like a really good guy and that personal touch you gave him has made me a fan.

    • I'm not sure you're calculating the number of strokes you would need to give correctly. The way I figure it, a 6.9 index golfer playing from tees that are rated 70.8/126 would have a course handicap of 6. A 20-index golfer playing from tees that are rated 64/106 would have a course handicap of 11. Therefore, based on the example above, assuming this is the same golf course and these index & slope numbers are based on the different tees, you should only have to give 5 strokes (or one stroke on the five most difficult holes if match play) not 6. Regardless, I get your point...the average golfer has no understanding of how the system works and trying to explain it to people, who haven't bothered to read the documentation provided by either the USGA or the R&A, is hopeless. In any case, I think the WHS as it currently is, does the best job possible of leveling the playing field and I think most golfers (obviously, based on the back & forth on this thread, not all golfers) at least comprehend that.
    • Day 115 12-5 Skills work tonight. Mostly just trying to be more aware of the shaft and where it's at. Hit foam golf balls.
    • Day 25 (5 Dec 25) - total rain day, worked on tempo and distance control.
    • Yes it's true in a large sample like a tournament a bunch of 20 handicaps shouldn't get 13 strokes more than you. One of them will have a day and win. But two on one, the 7 handicap is going to cover those 13 strokes the vast majority of the time. 20 handicaps are shit players. With super high variance and a very asymmetrical distribution of scores. Yes they shoot 85 every once in a while. But they shoot 110 way more often. A 7 handicap's equivalent is shooting 74 every once in a while but... 86 way more often?
