what is the cause of thin shots which cause line drives?

Could be any number of things. Ball position might be bad, or a faulty weight shift (resulting in an inconsistent ball position). You could be too far from the ball, or you may be "standing up" a bit during your swing (relative to your address posture).

Very common cause is trying to "hoist" the ball up in the air rather than letting the loft elivate the ball. A good drill is to hit shots at the range without a follow through. Practice hitting punch shots and work your way up to full follow through swings.

In my case, line drives or low shots usually come from not actully transfering my weight to my front foot.
