Making a Murderer Discussion Thread (Spoilers Likely)

He said if they press charges they believe the person is guilty. So they believe that's the truth.

If things come to light to change that they drop or change charges.

There are undoubtedly bad apples in the lot who will make up their own facts or bend rules but I don't think there's a systemic problem.

Thanks, appreciate it.

I'm glad I didn't read this thread till after I watched it.

This guy is obviously not a smart guy (forget the kid he's an idiot), so no one can tell me that he was able to mastermind this whole thing without leaving a lot more clues.  Blood is just not an easy thing to hide or clean when you are as dumb as this guy.

Why was the key not discovered until after the 5th or 6th search or what ever it was?  Why are there no blood stains in the room where she was raped and murdered?  We can all agree that a slit throat will generate a lot of splatter.

I don't want to rehash all the arguments, but I don't think he did it..  The guy is sitting on a 36m lawsuit and just got out of jail.. I'm sorry, I'm not buying the motive.

There's a lot more to the story than what they showed in the TV show.

It may or may not change your final opinion, but… if you care at all, do some reading.

A US judge has ordered the immediate prison release of Brendan Dassey.

Judge William Duffin ordered that Dassey be freed from prison under supervision until the next steps in the case become clear, reports the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. Under his release conditions, he must submit to the probation and parole office by midday on Tuesday the address where he plans to reside.

Evidence to be re-evaluated, including the car, blood stains, Avery's blood etc.

I've read this thread with interest as I stayed away from the show itself as I presumed it would be "hyped up" for entertainment purposes, and your reviews here seem to solidify that thought process,....I have however watched from afar and read the news and bio's etc

I'm undecided, for me it could go either way, he did 18 years for sexual assault but was exonerated due to DNA testing that proved without a shadow of a doubt his innocence, and the person who was then convicted for it bore a striking similarity to him, which shows how the victim could of pointed him out in a lineup, my partner is a rape counsellor and the psychological damage an attack like this does could easily skew someones perception,

With the manitowoc force being shown to be wrong, in quite a spectacular way could this be revenge? could they have fitted him up for it to make amends for the embarrassment they endured after his first wrongful conviction? i think it is possible, not likely, but possible. I think the fact that calumet county were put in charge due to his pending claim but allowed manitowoc officers to continue searching is poor form, the key not being found until the 5th search that was apparently "in plain sight" and the fact some of the jurors had connections to both county police forces almost beggars belief,

But i also think given his chequered past he could be culpable of it, and as it stands that is where the evidence leads us,

will be interesting to see where these new tests go

Who knows how they felt… but if I was them, I wouldn't feel "embarrassed." The rape victim herself identified him and said he was the guy.

If anyone should have felt bad in that it was her. Not for being raped of course, not at all, but for being so certain in mis-identifying her rapist.

As I understood it, too, few of those people were still heavily involved 20 years later or whatever.

quite possibly, although reading through the previous case the cops did make a series of errors that would ultimately lead to the lawsuit against them, like being told the real rapist had admitted to it but them not seeming bothered, if they had followed up on it Avery would of been exhonerated alot earlier, but like you say who really knows?

The 'funny' thing is, that even if the new testing proves evidence was planted, it still doesn't prove he didn't do it (depending on who planted it). There might have been some over enthusiastic detective that really wanted him to be guilty, but if that's the case: did it lead to a conviction of someone who is guilty after all, or someone who is innocent. We might never know.

I think that's the problem, it seems likely he did it, but police cannot go about securing the conviction with planted evidence because that brings into question "doubt" and a conviction shouldnt be given unless it is beyond reasonable doubt.

Police procedures are there to protect innocent people and to ensure those who are convicted are done so fairly,

If they are found to of placed evidence or fixed results then regardless of wether he did it or not he will walk, and it will be the police force's fault

Big shocker (or for enough people expected), if this is true:

I too agree with the opening summary.   After Mr. Simpleton's first conviction and release, the primary issues then pertain to a murder and subsequent law suit against the county.  I'll say no more at this time having watched it.

She's said things that didn't come to fruition in the past. So we'll see.

Thanks. I failed in that before, since then I post screenshots, next time I will use the URL.

And yes, she obviously has her own agenda. We'll see how it will unfold.

Not that I've seen, but I've been more or less off the grid lately because of a fresh new born in my life ;-)

Apparently earlier this month Zellner finally filed a motion requesting a new trial for Steven Avery, claiming that his conviction was based on planted evidence and false testimony. She claims that after intense testing the results show that the bones in the pit were planted, the key in the bedroom was planted, the blood in the car was planted and the bullet was planted. On her twitter she links to the documents. I have read some highlights, but I have no way to judge if it's believable or if they are jumping trough hoops. At least it's interesting. Curious how this will continue.

Bredan Dassey won his appeal in federal court

Quote

Today, the three-judge panel said it determined the confession was involuntary not because of a single statement or question, instead calling it "death by a thousand cuts." The judges' opinion takes issue with numerous techniques used by interrogators:

"Because of the cumulative effect of these coercive techniques — the leading, the fact‐feeding, the false promises, the manipulation of Dassey's desire to please, the physical, fatherly assurances as [Calumet County Sheriff's investigator Mark] Wiegert touched Dassey's knee etc. — no reasonable court could have any confidence that this was a voluntary confession"
