I got to start by saying Myrtle Beach was pretty awesome! Maybe a bit more to me cause I haven't been out of Wisconsin in over 20 years! It was actually my first... and probably last time on a plane also. My ears are not built for the landing part of the ride...so much pain...

Anyways, my wife and I arrived in Myrtle at about 11 o'clock a.m. last Wednesday. I was having my clubs sent with Ship Sticks and I was hoping that they would get there in time so I could hit the range and knock some rust off before my early tee time Thursday morning. (All my golf was hooked up by Brian Noblin or @bnlongdriver) Unfortunately my sticks didn't get to the hotel until 6 so I could hit up the range cause it was getting dark.

My first course was Mytlewood. Recommended cause it was a player friendly track. Good starter course basically. I got hooked up with 3 older nice gentleman. Decent hackers like me.... or at least i thought I was.. I sure am glad they were not too good cause that would've made my round that much more embarrassing. Firstly, I get a bit nervous playing with new people. I don't know why, but it seems to take me a few holes to get comfortable. This time i just couldn't get in a groove. First tee ball I completely bail out of and shanked the ball right. I was in the trees consistently for like 5 straight holes. I can't used to my distances cause some clubs seem to be going about 10 yds shorter or more. Sea level crap... it was just a hot mess. I ended up shooting 100! I haven't picked up a club in pretty much 3 months so I gave myself somewhat of a pass.

Second course I played was Prestwick. Another early tee time. It was probably about 40 degrees, and got about a half inch of rain the night before so it was chilly and wet when I teed off. A little cold, but I'm from Wisconsin, so that didn't affect me. I was a single this time. I convinced my wife to act as my chauffeur and photographer. I played alot better that day. The course was nice. Tight fairways and tough par 3's. I can't say I was keeping score cause I was sometimes hitting 2 balls and stuff, but I was definitely hitting the ball better than the day before. Prestwick was probably my 2nd favorite course of the weekend.

The next morning I hooked up with @bnlongdriver and a couple of his buddies for a round at the Dye Course at Barefoot. Brian and his buddies were all awesome! Giving each other shit all the time, laughing, having fun.... Probably the best foursome I've ever been apart of. It was more fun just hanging out than trying to shoot a good score. Which is good cause I again shot like crap, but this time the course really ate me alive, and I fought this pull all day. Brian and his buddy used to do that Remax  long drive thing apparently. Brian could knock the he'll out of the ball!! And he had a bum ankle! Little humbling when these guys who are 15 plus years your senior are out driving you by 20 to 30 yards. But Brian is also a good player! He drives and putts for dough apparently. His buddy was also a golf teacher and gave me some tips I would use at the course I played the next morning.

So the last day... Brian sent me to Tidewater. I got there 10 mins before my tee time. I was supposed to be going off with this twosome but they teed off right before I got there. The starter told me I'd be playing as a single unless I could catch them. I figured I could easily catch up. I smash my first Drive right down the middle of the fairway. I see the twosome finishing up on the green, and that would be the last time I saw them lol. I played really well for the most part that day too. I shot an 86, which is good for me, at a new course. They must have hit fairways... greens in reg... and 1 and 2 putted every hole. They finished their round in 2 and a half hrs.

Anyways, Tidewater was a gorgeous course. I enjoyed it a lot. Fairly difficult, and just had some cool looking holes. Just can't get those aesthetics at too many places here in Wisconsin.

Golfing in Myrtle was excellent! I just wish I would've played better overall. Other than  that, it was all gravy! Can't wait to go back again!

Cool man. Yeah MB is great. Glad you had a good time. Hopefully we will still hook up to play Erin Hills in the future sometime since we missed last year.

Thanks for write up. Get a Vicks inhaler , little Chapstick sized thing, for plane descents, keeps the nasal passages open. I have the same problem occasionally. Chewing gum helps some too

Yea, man it was awesome! I'm with you on playing Erin Hills. It was a real bummer we couldn't do it last year. Especially after I somehow convinced my I would be paying 300 bucks or so for a round of golf! I don't know if I have that persuasive power in me anymore...lol

Thanks. I know it was just a brief little tale of my trip. I could have went into more detail but I don't have the patience for typing. Lol... yea that plane descent was terrible. I chewed gum.. didn't help. I will try the Vicks next time.. something has to give! I felt like my ears were gonna explode!

Yawn and pull down on earlobes.  This will add some 'space' and clear your ears during the up and down of a flight.  I travel for work.  Hate it!

Thanks for the write-up on your Myrtle trip.  Good stuff. Couple of buddies have time-share condos there but wait until July / Aug time frame to go.  They've invited me, but playing in 90+ heat and humidity takes it out of you quickly.  Plus, these guys like to play TWO rounds a day if they can!

Big Wiiiiiiill ... I could tell on the phone you were a good guy, that's why I invited you to tee it up with Greg, Shawn and I. I knew you were a man after my own heart when at 7:20 I go to grab a Coke and you bust out with "I'll take 2 Coors light and his Coke too." I knew we'd get along just fine then! I enjoyed the day with you and would do it again in a heart beat! if you're ever back this way - let me know, you have a friend here!! Thanks for helping all of us have a great day on the links!

Yea, I definitely can't play in that heat either!  Rather play in 30 than 90 personally..

Well, I live in the northeast now... near Green Bay. I've been a member at a little course out here called Mid Vallee for the past 4 years. Nothing special, but it's a cheap membership and the course is always in great condition! But I like to play everywhere.  Closest I've been down that way is probably Washington County Golf Course. I played there last year. I play at least 2 of the Kohler courses every year. I'll play The Bull in the summer.... then hit up Blackwolf or The Irish Course. I got buddies in the Milwaukee area cause thats where I'm from... usually  I'll go down there and play Silver Spring or Brookfield every year also..

That's awesome I played Washington County last year for the 1st time. I really enjoyed it.  I want to play the bull and bog. So what's your favorite you've played in WI?

I enjoyed The Irish Course at Whistling... Whispering Springs in Fon Du Lac is a great track... There's a little known course in Valders, WI called Autumn Ridge.. one of my favorites! Door County has a few really nice courses out there also... but The Bull is my favorite... just an awesome layout... tough as nails course... it's such a bully but it is fun and I love the challenge!

I just got back from my trip with the college golf team to Myrtle Beach. We played all four Barefoot courses (the Love was probably my favorite, again) and then Caledonia/True Blue on the same day. I'd previously played Long Bay, Aberdeen, and some others a long time ago. We had a blast.

Sounds like you did as well. Very cool.

Yea... I had a great time! I can't wait to go down there again! I've heard good things about True Blue and Caledonia. Next time I'll definitely play both. I've done 36 holes a day for 5 days straight on a little golf trip I took in Door County 3 years ago. That was a good time!

Myrtle Beach used to be my favorite golf destination - until my first trip to Pinehurst!

I still like MB, and think that it is extremely friendly to a solo golfer. There have been 2-3 times that I just needed a break from work and lousy Ohio weather, and booked a flight, hotel and rental car, and headed to Myrtle. We also had a group that went to MB for a week each April up until about 2000, when the group started going different places each year.

There used to be a last-minute tee time kiosk in the lobby of what was Martin's Golf, and is now PGA Superstore, I think. I'd pop in there every day, and find the best deal on the best course available for the next day. I played a few of the courses that you mention, and liked Tidewater and Prestwick alot; my favorite courses in MB overall were Heritage, down south, Wizard was a pleasant surprise, and Thistle, way up north had the best greens that I have played in the MB area. I haven't played either Caledonia or True Blue; I'm a big Mike Strantz fan, but both courses were real pricey when I have visited.

I'm going back to MB in early June with a small group, playing the Legends group courses. I liked all 3 of the courses at the Legend's resort, but can't tell Parkland, Heathland and Moorland apart in my mind. We'll also be playing Heritage and Oyster Bay, and I might come in a day or two early to hit a couple other top-end tracks.

I've only been up in your home area once, and got to play Erin Hills a couple years ago. It's a great track, and I don't regret paying the $ to play it. The Kohler courses are still on my bucket list. Hopefully, I'll get to them soon.

Enjoyed your review of your trip. Wish I could hop on a plane and head to MB now, although our weather in Ohio is pretty awesome, for early March.

    • Day 316 - More swings, full backswing and full finish.
    • Day 132: did some mirror work while watching TV. Worked on backswing stuff primarily.
    • 26 Nov 24 -  It was not a record breaking round by any means, but rather a simple walking of the back nine today playing TBWB (two ball-worse ball) where the challenge is to play the worse of the two shots played - could be an errant drive from the woods, a tree knocked ball that is 100 yds farther back down the fairway, a nGIR ball as opposed to a GIR….the goal today was to stay no worse than bogie thru nine.  Managed to achieve that goal - bogied 7 holes with one dbl and one par to counter the dbl.  It’s about staying focused and not letting a bad shot or lie derail, but rather be an opportunity.
    • Day 208 (26 Nov 24)- Opted to walk 9 today (was the back nine as they had a huge group going off the front) but instead of it being persimmons and blades, I had the regular gamers but made it a TBWB (two ball-worst ball) round.  This really challenges on several fronts - ball striking to be as consistent as possible, course management from non-optimal lies and keeping your head in it as it can be depressing to nail a shot on line-on target and the second rattles the trees right and it’s over 50 yards back and that’s the one you have to play.  The goal was to be no worse than bogie overall (+9).  Finished the round exactly on the number with some solid recoveries, no penalty strokes and only one 3-putt.
