This is probably general question that applies to a lot of us... I read a lot about high launch, low spin with the driver, say around 17° and 2000 rpm.

My launch is between 14 and 15 degrees, but I have higher spin sometimes around 3000, but recently it's been closer to 2600 on the spin... how do I take even more off? I've really been working on SK3 lately, a lot actually. Could it be a ball position issue?

Just basically wondering what generally causes more backspin with the driver...

Thanks in advance,

Shane...

P.S. I will post an update in My Swing thread, later in the week and try to get both DTL and FO views... So maybe the universe can see what I'm maybe doing that I can work on.

In order of priority,

1. More solid ball strike, glancing blows causes higher spin. As well as hitting the ball lower on the clubface can dramatically increase spin.
2. Hit up on the ball. It decreases spin loft and increases launch angle.
3. Get fit for a driver that has a lower spin profile.

Already did number 3, @saevel25. I think number 1 is probably what's causing it, I do tend to catch it a little ""bottomy" at times... but my bottom hits have decreased.

I thought number two was my main issue, which is probably why I can occasionally pull off the driver off the deck shot...

So if I find where my swing bottoms out with the driver. Should I just tee it up ahead of that point?

My spin is around 500-600 lower than it was, launch angle is a smidge lower.

That is a good place to start. Also be mindful of your set up. Here is a really good thread summarizing some things you can do to help yourself out.

I think AoA is more instinctual than that. If you move the ball up in the stance may still hit down on the down and slide forward or reach to hit it.

Go to the range and practice hitting off of a very high tee without flipping the hands to reach up to the ball.

I find a decent way to get the sense of it is to also add a good amount of secondary axis tilt away from the target. Then try to maintain that angle at impact. This might be beneficial to really feel like you're not leaning towards the target and hitting down. It's hard to hit down when you're tilted away from the target.

    • I'm not sure you're calculating the number of strokes you would need to give correctly. The way I figure it, a 6.9 index golfer playing from tees that are rated 70.8/126 would have a course handicap of 6. A 20-index golfer playing from tees that are rated 64/106 would have a course handicap of 11. Therefore, based on the example above, assuming this is the same golf course and these index & slope numbers are based on the different tees, you should only have to give 5 strokes (or one stroke on the five most difficult holes if match play) not 6. Regardless, I get your point...the average golfer has no understanding of how the system works and trying to explain it to people, who haven't bothered to read the documentation provided by either the USGA or the R&A, is hopeless. In any case, I think the WHS as it currently is, does the best job possible of leveling the playing field and I think most golfers (obviously, based on the back & forth on this thread, not all golfers) at least comprehend that.

    • Day 25 (5 Dec 25) - total rain day, worked on tempo and distance control.
    • Yes it's true in a large sample like a tournament a bunch of 20 handicaps shouldn't get 13 strokes more than you. One of them will have a day and win. But two on one, the 7 handicap is going to cover those 13 strokes the vast majority of the time. 20 handicaps are shit players. With super high variance and a very asymmetrical distribution of scores. Yes they shoot 85 every once in a while. But they shoot 110 way more often. A 7 handicap's equivalent is shooting 74 every once in a while but... 86 way more often?
