Hey everybody I'm new to the Trap. Been reading it for years for some great advice.

Wanted to come in and lay out my new bag setup for this year. I'm in Syracuse N.Y. so probably will be a few more weeks before I get out to play.

My background in golf is I started playing when I was 16. I bought a $5 set of clubs at a garage sale and was hooked. I played college baseball and two years of college golf. I was shooting in the 90's before I joined the golf team broke into the 80's. After college I had some money so I paid for 3 lessons from a pro at a local course. This guy is more of a playing pro. Not much of a teacher lol. I hit balls for about 5 moms during my first lesson and he said "you don't need lessons, you need to learn how to play on the course"

I thought wow I must be really good..... Well the rest of the summer I was in his Saturday and Sunday morning money game with his buddies. Needless to say each day ended up being a very expensive lesson for a 22 year old right out of college. In the bright side I learned how to work my way around the golf course and by the end of the golf season here in upstate N.Y. I was down to a 3 handicap.

That was the best summer of my golf life. Life happened and now a days I'm and 8 handicap and my summers are spent playing in a league 1 night a week and getting asked to play in about 30 captain and crew tournaments.

So where am I going with all of this? I was thinking back to when I got down to a 3 handicap and thought about my bag set up back then and what it is now.

This year I am going back to a set more like what I used to play. With a few tweaks to see if I can get back to where I was if not better.

Here is my bag:

Nike lucky 13 driver x100 shaft

(little tweak)

Super concord 4,7,9,11 fairway woods x100 shafts

(9 and 11 wood new to me)

Taylormade T-D 7,8,9, p.s. blade irons s400 shafts

Acer wedges 52,56,60,64 FST wedge shafts

Taylormade putter.

So basically looking to see if anybody else has a similar setup. I've always carried 5 wedges. (big believer in Pelz) My longer irons have always been an issue I believe because I'm more of a sweeper of the ball than digger. My Driver and wedges always save my rounds.

Just curious to hear what people think of my setup and curious on how it has worked for them.

Sorry for the long post. Figured a little background would be in order for any suggestions.

Thanks

Welcome to The Sand Trap. I play between three and four wedges depending on what I am working on. PW, 54, 58 or PW, GW, 54, 58. I've never tried a lob wedge higher than a 58. How do you hit the 60 and 64? Do you ever take full shots with them or just pitch shots?

Hey thanks for the reply. I actually do hit my 60 and 64 28th full shots. I get about 75-80 yards with the 64 if I really step in it. I use the pelz method so a lot of times distances overlap and I have two or three different wedges and swings to pick from. So I may use a 56 at 9:00 o'clock instead of the 64 at 10:30.

I built these wedges and they have a larger bounce on them compared to most high lofted wedges. That's why they are easier to hit off the fairway with a full swing.

These are the wedges I built. They were a very good price and I like all of my wedges to match.

Welcome, to the site @5wedgeguy.

It seems like the 5 wedge set up works for you...

Here's my question, are you actually bagging both TM T-D wedges? Because the PW is 49 or 50° in that set, and the SW is 57°... So theorically, you might have one too many wedges...

I too, bag a 4 wood instead of the traditional D, 3w setup. If you do ever get newer irons, you may need six wedges for your set-up. But you're a 3 handicap, it's not the tools, it's the carpenter.

A tiny off-topic, I live down in Ithaca. So I feel your pain about not getting out yet... I've been to the range a couple times, but a lot of courses don't open till Friday.

Hey there onthehunt. I'm actually not a 3 anymore. I'm an 8 now. I will get back down though this summer I hope. I only play the PW in the taylormade blades. I had it bent to 49 and a couple degrees flat. My 52,56,60,64 are all the Acer wedges I posted.

I do have more modern sets. I have a set of Hogan apex forged irons I really like. A set of cobra forged muscle backs that I really like too. They are a stronger loft and they go too far for my taste. 7 iron carries around 175-180. Since I just play in a league and in tournaments I never really have more than 130 to 140 into par 4's anyway is rather have the workability of the blades.

I've become a fair weather golfer in the fact that I really won't play until the end of April or beginning of may when it dries out a little bit. We should meet up in Cortland sometime and play a couple rounds. It's only about a 40 mom drive.

    • Day 27 (7 Dec 25) - Got in a few swings with 9i and hard foam balls in backyard.  Setup weight fwd (rebuilt left foot really lets me feel the weight in a slightly painful way) - kept the backswing to around 9 o’clock focusing on contact and resulting divot pattern.  Like how the hard foam balls come off the face (almost like real balls in sound).  A good abbreviated session as I only able to hit about a dozen balls in the fading light.
    • Day 117 12-7 A bit of chipping practice today. Full swing- hit some real balls to see where Im at.
    • Not the part I was replying to: Handicaps did not go down much (like 0.14 on average IIRC?) when we went from 10/20*0.96 to 8/20. And a good chunk of that was from the +s.
    • I think he meant in the UK. The old system was completely different from the new one. 10/20 x 0.96 vs 8/20 would really only impact very low handicaps I think. The 0.96 serves to increase differentials for plus differentials, where 8/20 vs 10/20 works to lower differentials for all. I don't know many plus golfers who would be upset that their index got lower. A lot of really good players don't even really keep their handicaps up-to-date. They're much more interested in their WAGR rankings which get them entries to certain events.
    • Day 433 - 2025-12-07 Got some work in after Junior Elite before a night of sports (and the return of my wife!). Backswing work. Similar to what a lot of my juniors are doing.
