I am looking into buying the new Titleist AP2 irons as well as new Titleist woods/ hybrids. I am set on the irons and getting at least one wood and one hybrid but I am not too sure if I should get 4-PW with 3H and 3W or 5-PW with 2 hybrids and a wood. I currently have Taylormade RBZ irons (4-PW) but I can't hit my 4 iron whatsoever. I am leaning towards getting 5-PW and then getting 2 hybrids and one wood. What would you recommend for my hybrids and wood combo? I hit the Titleist 3 wood about 230 and the Titleist 3 hybrid about 215. Any help would be appreciated!

I am a college golfer and our school has a Titleist discount so that's why everything is Titleist.

I have basically that set up with the 714 AP2. The 915H 4 hybrid launches pretty high. If you can get your current 4 iron to launch high, I would go with the iron instead of the hybrid. The AP2 launches fairly high. It is a great iron.

If you're not comfortable with your current 4-iron, I'm not sure that getting a different 4-iron would be a really smart thing to do.  I'd say you're thinking logically when you talk about getting 5-W and two hybrids.  I also have 714 AP-2s, and they do launch higher than my previous Mizunos, probably due to using the KBS shafts.  When I tested them with DG shafts they launched lower.

I play the AP2 3-W with DG High Launch shafts. Use to hit low stingers with my 3 and 4 irons until I put the High Launch shafts on them. I would keep your 4 iron and maybe try out some different shaft options, it worked for me. Then go get the Titleist 21 or 19 degree hybrid and 15 degree fairway wood.

See if a different shaft on your current 4i improves things. Then, use this info when arranging your AP2 set-up.

(And, I assume you will get a fitting for the AP2 set.)

What you might do on the AP2 set: Get 4i as the low iron in the set, and use it when appropriate. If it launched a bit lower than the 4H, the 4i might be useful for tight tee shots on certain courses.

Fairway Woods: if you're going with a single FW, at least try out a 4W before buying a 3W. A couple of years ago at a demo day, the Tour Edge rep was having us try both 3Ws and 4Ws in the Exotics model. To our surprise, a couple of  the big hitters got more distance out of a 4W than a 3W. It depends partly on how you come into the ball. Just something to consider.

    • Is it? I bought the Stack radar to replace my PRGR based on what Stack told me! When I am swinging for speed, the PRGR would miss 50%-80% of my backswings due to a higher speed. The stack seldom misses those- at least for me.
    • As an analyst by nature, I would like to compare the scores under both systems. It is something we can easily do if we have the data. I actually thought the new system was less fair to those whose game was on the decline - like mine! Old: Best 10 of last 20 scores with the .96 multiplier. Course handicap excluded course rating and overall par. New: Best 8/20. Course handicap includes course rating -par. My understanding is Stableford caps scores at Net double bogey like stroke play. If so, handicap should be slower to rise because you are only using 8 versus 10 scores. If I am missing something, I am curious enough to  want to understand what that may be. My home course tees that I play are 72.1/154 now. My best score out here is 82. When my game started to decline, my handicap didn’t budge for 13 rounds because of good scores in my first 8! I know I am an anomaly but my handicap has increased almost 80% in the past few years (with only a few rounds this year). For a few months I knew I was losing every bet because my game was nowhere near my handicap. I suspect I have steamrolled a few nuances but that shouldn’t matter much. When I have modeled this with someone playing the same tees and course, one good round, or return to form, will immediately reduce the handicap by some amount.
