What exactly is it that makes a driver non-conforming? I compared conforming and non-conforming drivers side by side and couldn't tell the difference. Also, does it only apply to drivers or are there also non-conforming fairway woods, irons, putters, etc.?

How do I know that my Hibore XL is conforming/ nonconforming? The Hibore XL stands on both lists..

I both mine from www.rockbottomgolf.com Can somebody help me?

I was looking over the list of non-conforming drivers and had a question arise. Is it possible that in a couple years, my driver will be non-conforming? Or is it more of a, "once it works, it always works" type of thing?

I See that several players stated that they can find no difference in performance between thier conforming and non-conforming clubs....
Wow! Really? I have recorded great differences between my conforming clubs(cobra F-speed, Taylor Made R7, Krank El-Diablo) and my Non-conforming Taylor Made R7 (COR .865) and Yamaha Inpres GRX(COR.880).
To make a long story short My max swing speed is 147 mph and my average tee box swing speed is 126 mph. My max speed is only attainable at the range when I have been working on my timing for hours at a time.
The last time I tested all my drivers side by side I hit 20 balls with each club and only recorded the 10 fastest swing speeds with each. I used pinnacle exceptions with all clubs. I used a radar swing sensor for clubhead speeds and a Garmin Golf Logix for distances. I found that my Conforming clubs performed as follows:
R-7 averaged 297 yards at 227 mph swing
Cobra F-Speed 291 yards at 225 mph swing but much more accurrate
Krank El Diablo 296 yards average but my swings never got over 226 mph with an average of 222 mph.

Non-conforming clubs performed as follows:

Taylor Made R-7 COR .865 averaged 319 yards at 226 mph average swing speed.
Yamaha GRX Inpres .880 COR averaged 333 yards at 227 mph average swing.

This test needs to be performed again and under a variety of conditions but the results are pretty amazing.
The difference between my shortest club and longhest club was 42 yards! Is that a 14% increase? My math sucks... But still, pretty darned noticable!
I think the key to getting results from a Non-conforming club is to get your club head speed up there!
Cheers,

220+ mph swing speeds? Hmmmm. A club swung at that kind of speed would not be conforming after impact. It would be "broken."

Actually the more logical and sensible interpretation of the data is that PING is not willing to push the limits in research and technology and their clubs perform well under the factor thresholds that determine whether a club is conforming or non-conforming.

I don't see how greed and profit come into play here.

or not. The v.p. and C.E.O. of Ping (the creator of the company's son) had this to say...(a few years ago), but it still holds value.

"Someone took advantage of a slight difference between the R&A; and the USGA to market their clubs,'' said John Solheim, chairman and CEO of Ping Golf. " It's too bad they had to sacrifice the game for financial goals .'' from: http://www.golftoday.co.uk/news/year.../callaway.html

No, but they're willing to sue the USGA over grooves... I don't think Ping's the saint their lack of "non-conforming drivers" implies.

Ping is not

making (for sale) the grooves-within-grooves clubs yet. They are not putting them out there against the rules, then waiting for a reaction. They are testing the USGA with their design ideas to see if they will be approved. They are not boldly in the face of the USGA. If they produced the clubs and sold them after the USGA/R&A; declared them nonconforming – THEN they would be hypocritical – but as it is - they are just testing the waters (on paper ).

Are you relatively new to the game? I was referring to 1990.

No.

Are you referring to the Ping Eye 2 Square groove issue? Ping sued beacuse the USGA declared the grooves illegal and banned them from USGA play after years of them being perfectly legal. They reached a settlement and the ban on the "illegal" groves was lifted, without the USGA admitting to vilolating anti-trust laws, but the clubs were grandfathered back in. Ping never went around any USGA rule or blatantly ignored any rule to try to sell more clubs. They just defended what was legal in the first place.

This is off-topic, so I'll keep it short. Obviously I was referring to that, I know what went down, and I lost respect for Ping because of it. I thought they handled it poorly.

    • Yea, if I were to make a post arguing against the heat map concept, citing some recent robot testing would be my first point. The heat map concept is what I find interesting, more on that below. The robot testing I have looked at, including the one you linked, do discreet point testing then provide that discrete data in various forms. Which as you said is old as the hills, if you know of any other heat map concept type testing, I would be interested in links to that though! No, and I did say in my first post "if this heat map data is valid and reliable" meaning I have my reservations as well. Heck beyond reservations. I have some fairly strong suspicions there are flaws. But all I have are hunches and guesses, if anyone has data to share, I would be interested to see it.  My background is I quit golfing about 9 years ago and have been toying with the idea of returning. So far that has been limited to a dozen range sessions in late Summer through Fall when the range closed. Then primarily hitting foam balls indoors using a swing speed monitor as feedback. Between the range closing and the snow flying I did buy an R10 and hit a few balls into a backyard net. The heat map concept is a graphical representation of efficiency (smash factor) loss mapped onto the face of the club. As I understand it to make the representation agnostic to swing speed or other golfer specific swing characteristics. It is more a graphical tool not a data tool. The areas are labeled numerically in discrete 1% increments while the raw data is changing at ~0.0017%/mm and these changes are represented as subtle changes in color across those discrete areas. The only data we care about in terms of the heat map is the 1.3 to 1.24 SF loss and where was the strike location on the face - 16mm heal and 5mm low. From the video the SF loss is 4.6% looking up 16mm heal and 5mm low on the heat map it is on the edge of where the map changes from 3% loss to 4%. For that data point in the video, 16mm heal, 5mm low, 71.3 mph swing speed (reference was 71.4 mph), the distance loss was 7.2% or 9 yards, 125 reference distance down to 116. However, distance loss is not part of a heat map discussion. Distance loss will be specific to the golfers swing characteristics not the club. What I was trying to convey was that I do not have enough information to determine good or bad. Are the two systems referencing strike location the same? How accurate are the two systems in measuring even if they are referencing from the same location? What variation might have been introduced by the club delivery on the shot I picked vs the reference set of shots? However, based on the data I do have and making some assumptions and guesses the results seem ok, within reason, a good place to start from and possibly refine. I do not see what is wrong with 70mph 7 iron, although that is one of my other areas of questioning. The title of the video has slow swing speed in all caps, and it seems like the videos I watch define 7i slow, medium, and fast as 70, 80, and 90. The whole question of mid iron swing speed and the implications for a players game and equipment choices is of interest to me as (according to my swing speed meter) over my ~decade break I lost 30mph swing speed on mine.
    • Maxfli, Maltby, Golfworks, all under the Dicks/Golf Galaxy umbrella... it's all a bit confounding. Looking at the pictures, they all look very, very similar in their design. I suspect they're the same club, manufactured in the same factory in China, just with different badging.  The whacky pricing structure has soured me, so I'll just cool my heels a bit. The new Mizuno's will be available to test very soon. I'm in no rush.
    • Day 23 - 2026-01-12 Finally outdoors again with 10 minutes of 7 iron work in the net. Also mirror work. Excited to get back on the range tomorrow and maybe do some film.
    • Day 10: 2026.01.12 Hit 25 balls at the range, working on rotating right hip during backswing.
