I thought extending my putter shaft would not have much effect on the performance but here is what I found out.

I extended 1 inch on my Scotty Cameron Newport 2 about 2 weeks ago and have been playing for a while to get used to it.

I used to average about 32-33 putts per game and now I am going over 40...

I can't seem to get the distance right and tend to over putt by a lot.

It has been 2 weeks already and I am still putting like this ever since the shaft extension.

Is this normal and if so how long before I get adjusted to the new length and swing weight?

Has anyone experienced this or am I being sensitive... Thanks...

Adding the inch to your putter changed the swing weight. The weight of the head matched the weight of the shaft. This is directly from Scotty Cameron's site

You may be missing lots of putts because your eyes are no longer over the top of the ball. Set up to the ball and then drop a ball from your eyes and see if it hits the ball on the floor.

If your eyes are not over the ball your alignment will be completely wrong.
Golf is a game whose aim is to hit a very small ball into an even smaller hole, with weapons singularly ill-designed for the purpose.

I just changed my putting stroke and it has made my distance control the best its every been for me.

What I do to control my distance of my putts is the following:

1) the distance of my back stroke determines the distance I want the ball to travel.
2) the only difference is my follow through stoke is the same extention and tempo for all my putts regardless of a 5 foot putt or a 10 foot putt.
3) careful that your follow through strokes and tempo is consistant everytime you putt. this stroke allows me to accelerate through my putt everytime.
4) The tempo and follow through strokes is what I work on when I first get on the green before my round.

I have sunk a long left to right down hill putt for eagle recently and found all my other putts are just pass the hole and within tap in distance.

it works for me and maybe for you too.

As Rambler mention Scotty Cameron Putters are weighted for the length, mine is also a Newport 2, 33 inches and is weighted at 350 grams. just to elimate any doubt you might add a few grams of weight to match Scotty Cameron's length to weight specs provided above from Rambler.

good luck!

Hi. Thanks for the info but could you give me the link to where you got the info on swingweights? It kind of doesn't make sense that swing weights are so different. All should be about the same swing weight therefore the adjustment in weight and length no? I just want to read up the whole thing before making any changes. Thanks.

By lengthening your putter, I suspect you've increased the swing speed causing your putts to go longer. Right now, your mind is geared to yield X distance with Y effort. Once you modify the instrument (lengthening your putter), you've effectively increased the swing speed of the head (and the distance the ball travels) if you apply the same effort. There's a property in physics that explains this, but I don't know what that is.

So, to compensate, you have to modify (in this case reduce) your effort to yield the same distance you previously had. I would suggest, for the interim, that you try to have your ball stop at the cup rather past it until you can gauge the speed with your "new" putter. I use this when I play greens that are faster than what I'm accustomed to. I play a little more break and pick a spot for my ball to die that is just short of the cup or at the cup if my putts are going too long.

    • Day 11: did mirror work for a while. Worked on the same stuff.
    • I'm not sure you're calculating the number of strokes you would need to give correctly. The way I figure it, a 6.9 index golfer playing from tees that are rated 70.8/126 would have a course handicap of 6. A 20-index golfer playing from tees that are rated 64/106 would have a course handicap of 11. Therefore, based on the example above, assuming this is the same golf course and these index & slope numbers are based on the different tees, you should only have to give 5 strokes (or one stroke on the five most difficult holes if match play) not 6. Regardless, I get your point...the average golfer has no understanding of how the system works and trying to explain it to people, who haven't bothered to read the documentation provided by either the USGA or the R&A, is hopeless. In any case, I think the WHS as it currently is, does the best job possible of leveling the playing field and I think most golfers (obviously, based on the back & forth on this thread, not all golfers) at least comprehend that.
    • Day 115 12-5 Skills work tonight. Mostly just trying to be more aware of the shaft and where it's at. Hit foam golf balls.
    • Day 25 (5 Dec 25) - total rain day, worked on tempo and distance control.
    • Yes it's true in a large sample like a tournament a bunch of 20 handicaps shouldn't get 13 strokes more than you. One of them will have a day and win. But two on one, the 7 handicap is going to cover those 13 strokes the vast majority of the time. 20 handicaps are shit players. With super high variance and a very asymmetrical distribution of scores. Yes they shoot 85 every once in a while. But they shoot 110 way more often. A 7 handicap's equivalent is shooting 74 every once in a while but... 86 way more often?
