I am in the market for a driver, and I am leaning toward the Titleist 907 d2. I am currently around a 24hdcp, and currently using a TaylorMade R540D, 9.5deg and a regular shaft. My swing speed is about 94-97mph, and I hit my drives on average 230-250yards, mostly straight or a slight push. I am 37 years old . I have not hit the Titelist as of yet, and before the suggestions start to come in (I hope) I am not fond of the way a "non traditional" driver head looks at address, like the Nike or the Cleveland. Any help would be appreciated. I would like to hear from golfers who use the Titleist or the Tour Edge brand. I have heard/read good things about the Tour Edge line and would like some input.

So here's the issue: Titleist is typically for lower-handicappers. That's not to say that you can't use them: there are plenty of folks with our range of handicaps that use Titleists successfuly. But Acushnet's higher-handicap clubs tend to come out under the Cobra name. I've got about your handicap and swing speed and a bit less distance, and I use the Cobra F-Speed 10.5 degrees. Here's an important question first: why are you getting a new driver? Trouble with the current one? What sort of trouble? Looking for more accuracy or more distance? Yes, I realize we're all looking for both: is the reason for a new driver more one than the other?

May I know the reason why you choose Titleist/Tour Edge driver if you haven't tried them before? What's wrong with the R540D?

My swing speed is about the same as yours. I just got my TM SuperQuad 10.5 deg in stock regular shaft a week ago. I tried them once at the range and then had it re-shafted with UST Proforce V2 65g R-flex 2 days ago. Well, I can't tell much about it because it's still in the shop and I haven't picked it up yet. I'll do a follow up once I've gotten my hands on it. I've tried Titleist D1 and D2 at demo day before 5 months ago, but it was like an "okay" driver. You know like you hit something then you go on that kind of thing? The impression didn't stay. But when I hit FT-5 and WOW! I still remember how it felt until this day. I hit 5 times (I put 3 solid and 2 crappy swings) all of them went fairly straight, nothing wild. I forgot what shaft it was, but I'm sure it's stock. The reason why I didn't get it is because the price scared me off. Also I've heard reviews that it's not long. I know some people choose driver based on look. I do that sometimes too. But if you want a driver to perform at its best, I'd strongly you try it first and get fitted later.

I agree with this, you may be better to look at the Cobra which is Ascunet's game improvement brand (which a 24 handicap probably needs no offence). Or if you really want titleist, maybe the D1, it is quite forgiving and straight compared to the D2.

I am getting a new driver simply because I left the TaylorMade at my vacation home in Florida. I am in no rush to make a purchase, since I will not be playing golf until March-April (unless I hit the lottery and move to a warm climate

) Thanks for the input

Thank you all for taking the time to answer me. I will be checking out many models, and there is even a Golfsmith near me, so I will be "demo"ing clubs probably after the Holidays. I still would like to hear from at least 1 person who is using the Tour Edge Line. C'mon, I know your out there!!

Yeah, I almost purchased a Titleist 907-D2 also - I'd narrowed it down to that and the Nike Sasquatch SUMO, which came out on tops cos I hit straighter with it.

However, the last 3 weeks I've left the driver at hime and have been using the Sasquatch SUMO 3-wood, simply cos I'm not consistent enough off the tee with the driver yet.....the 3-wood, however, I can hit 220-230, with maybe 60-70% hitting the fairways. As soon as I'm hitting the 3-wood with total confidence, I'll put the driver back in the bag.

As someone already said, Titleist drivers are not as forgiving as many. I found that out with a 905R. I've owned a good many drivers in the past year, Launcher Comp, G5, TEE, 905R, Maltby CT250, Geek DCT, R5 Dual TP, Rapture, and more I can't remember. I hit a friend's G2 10º with a tip weighted (10g) BB Solutions 130 stiff shaft (at 46-3/4") and just crushed it with an easy swing. I bought a used one and had the friend make it up just like his. No more new drivers. Finding a good head and putting a good shaft in it is the way to go IMHO. In any case, if you're buying new, get on a launch monitor and find the one that fits you best.

The truth is Titleist makes drivers that spin way too much and go short. I'd look around if I were you. Check out Cleveland, Adams, Tour Edge, Taylor Made ( especially the Burner Draw at your handicap), Ping (once again G10 draw- long and helps the slices!) and Callaway.

A real sleeper is the Geek Fail Safe II. Very, very long and forgiving.

Any of those companies probably make a driver that will perform better for you.

I'm sure you can't go wrong with any of the suggestions here. I know lots of folks who play the Titleist and are happy.

I strongly recommend the new PING drivers. I had the G2 and G5 and now the G10. For more of my thoughts on this: http://emergency9.blogspot.com/2007/...008-style.html Good luck with your choice Jeff! BCA

    • Is it? I bought the Stack radar to replace my PRGR based on what Stack told me! When I am swinging for speed, the PRGR would miss 50%-80% of my backswings due to a higher speed. The stack seldom misses those- at least for me.
    • As an analyst by nature, I would like to compare the scores under both systems. It is something we can easily do if we have the data. I actually thought the new system was less fair to those whose game was on the decline - like mine! Old: Best 10 of last 20 scores with the .96 multiplier. Course handicap excluded course rating and overall par. New: Best 8/20. Course handicap includes course rating -par. My understanding is Stableford caps scores at Net double bogey like stroke play. If so, handicap should be slower to rise because you are only using 8 versus 10 scores. If I am missing something, I am curious enough to  want to understand what that may be. My home course tees that I play are 72.1/154 now. My best score out here is 82. When my game started to decline, my handicap didn’t budge for 13 rounds because of good scores in my first 8! I know I am an anomaly but my handicap has increased almost 80% in the past few years (with only a few rounds this year). For a few months I knew I was losing every bet because my game was nowhere near my handicap. I suspect I have steamrolled a few nuances but that shouldn’t matter much. When I have modeled this with someone playing the same tees and course, one good round, or return to form, will immediately reduce the handicap by some amount.
