Short story...My son does not have a handicap yet but we are establishing one for him, so my question is what is the max score he can take on a hole for ESC purposes?  Not sure if he would fall into the 30-39 (highest 9) range or the over 40 (highest 10) range.  Or since he does not have a handicap yet would I just count every stroke and post until he gets  handicap?

What up bro?  I think I found your answer above.  In the ESC section in a paragraph beneath the table it says that a male without an established index should use 36.4 as their index to figure the course handicap, and thus the ESC, until they do have an established handicap.

And it won't take long either - I think you only need 3 or 4 or 5 scores returned before you get an official handicap.

Yes on 36.4, but your ESC is based on playing handicap. So if you get 40 strokes or more on a given course, your ESC is 10.

And you need at least 5 scores to define your first handicap. This will be the lowest index from the five you can count for handicap purposes.

Just to avoid any confusion - it would be the lowest differential, not index.
