After reading all the threads in the forum regarding Skycaddy vs rangefinders, I have decided that for me, a rangefinder would be more practical. Now the decision is Pinseeker 1500 vs Callaway L1200. Any suggestions?
Excluding the difference in cost, any preferences, cons etc.?
Thanks

The Callaway one is made by Nikon. I think you can get it cheaper from them(the same thing) but it will not say Callaway on it.

I'd go for Bushnell, because it's their bread and butter. I don't like the idea of Callaway logo on Nikon's products. Now have you seen Nikon irons set made by Callaway? No because that would be plain silly. Heck, even McDonalds can have their own rangefinder and iron sets. I just can't make sense out of it.

P.S: Get the 1500 Slope Edition.

I've used the Bushnell Pinseeker Medalist (not the 1500) and the Nikon 500G Lasercaddy extensively. I prefer the Nikon (they make the LR1200) because it is more compact, has better eye relief (I wear glasses), and is slightly better at getting readings.

If you go with the 1500 you'll really like the slope model - but it is illegal (don't know if that matters in your case or not).

While I have no experience with the Callaway/Nikon rangefinder, I do own the Bushnell Pinseeker 1500 Tournament edition, which is permited for use in tournaments. It seems that by most accounts with which I'm familiar, the Bushnell non slope edition is currently the gold standard for rangefinders ( if the slope edition were legal for tournament use, it might be the standard, rather than the non slope model ). I have used the 1500 for about a year. I use it in every round I play. It's simple to use, well built and accurate. One does have to steady the hands to use it, but that's not so hard unless your on course drink of choice is a martini ( unless you happen to be like Dr. Carey Middlecoff, for whom vodka was a tonic { bad pun intended } ).

The 1500 does its business with ease and a minimum of fuss. I am very pleased to own one and recommend them highly.

I bought a Nikon 500G. Max range is only 500 yards, but then again, how often do you need to range something over 500 yards away on a golf course? Only mention the range because the Callaway LR1200 (make by Nikon, says Nikon right on it), goes out to 1200 yards, and the Bushnell reaches 1500.

I don't have much experience using the 500G, as it just arrived from Amazon a few days ago, but at 1/2 the price of the Bushnell 1500, and half the size, I went with it.

The Bushnell w/ slope would be a neat toy, but I think the extra money is better spent on some lessons, at least in my case.

Bushnell has a smaller V2 tour pinseeker that is due out later this month. I have a 1500 tourament edition on the way. I have been using my friends when we play together and have found no faults, it does take a steady hand though. http://www.golfsmith.com/products/294272

Thanks for the info.
I will wait and see what the new V2 is like and what features it has.
The truth is that living and playing mostly in Florida, the elevation feature is not that useful!

So.........went to a place with Nikon products where they have an L1200 rangefinder (for hunting) that looks exactly like the Callaway-Nikon L1200
(I am sure it is the same).
They sell for almost $100 less than the Callaway. I can't believe they can rip off people like that.
On top of that I got a survey to fill out on Callaway products in my e-mail today. If I would have only known at the time..........!!!!!!!

From what I've been told, the "golf" range finders are programmed to lock on to the closest object, such as the pin, where a hunting range finder, will lock on to ther farthest object. Because of this, I would buy one specifically made for golf if that will be your primary use of it.

Also, I finally got to use my Nikon 500G a on the course several times this week. It works great, I can range the flag at well over 200 yards without a problem.

That doesn't make sense, why would a hunting range finder lock on to the farthest object?.. Seems to me that they should work the same... ???

It's just plain silly that a stamp could cost extra $100.

No, for hunting, you don't want it to be locking on tree branches and things like that. Only the innocent deer you're going to shoot

    • So, you come to a golf forum looking for help, then handicap the help given by saying you don't want to hear the obvious and correct answer. Then, you degrade into this tirade? Like what do you want? What is your objective? Are you really here for help? If not, then go somewhere else.
    • Upgraded today from 1970's MacGregor blades to Cobra Aerojet cavity back irons. Huge difference!
    • yeah my parents are lawyers and are really rich so i got everything really rich ive played golf for 2 years and im a 8 handicap so im going to the pga tour
    • I would agree with your assessment here. How are you at picking targets? Are you still aiming for the biggest part of the green or do you start flag hunting with a wedge in your hands? I don't really use this one. I would think that's a pretty good assumption, unless you have some weird combination of terrible from inside of 25 yards from the fairway and excellent from outside of 25 yards to offset that somehow, that it's primarily your short game from the rough that needs improvement. You can also go to the proximity by lie/distance breakdown in the overview tab to see more. For example, my SG stats look like this for the short game: But if you go to the proximity page, it paints a clearer picture. Don't forget you can hover over the bars on the graph to see how many you have taken from that lie. My short game inside of 25 yards isn't actually as bad as the SG stat would indicate, but it's completely skewed by my ineptitude out of greenside bunkers. Out of 101 shots overall inside of 25 yards, 22 of them were from the bunker. Many of them from the same bunker. Repeatedly. If you look at a glance at my 25-50 yard proximity stats, you might think it's the same issue, but it's not. Out of 41 shots overall, only 4 were from bunkers there, so that's not affecting the overall numbers too much. Same with the fairway stats, it looks like I do pretty well from the fairway from 25-50 yards out, but n=3. Not statistically significant.
