I don't think that demonstrates anything but proficiency. I think you'd find the same type of thing going on if you put the electrodes on a contractor, a teacher, or any other profession or job or even just a guy playing a video game and then asked someone who wasn't good at that thing to do that task.

I don't think that demonstrates that their brains are different. Just that they have gotten so good at some particular thing that they don't have to think about it as much.

Agree.

The interesting part of the show was how they were able to "train" your brain to get more proficiency faster. Their example was with soccer players. They had 8 moving balls and 4 of them were highlighted then the balls moved all over the place and you needed to identify the 4 highlighted balls. Then they changed the background, added distractions, and your brain could be trained to work more like the elite athletes. This has interesting applications where we could train ourselves to be more proficient faster.

There was no proof that once players got good at the game they were immediately good soccer players, but they had a bunch of coaches on saying it helped. I am skeptical but if someone came along with a way to train your brain to be more proficient, faster, then I would be game to try.

I try to swing like a pro.  That is basically the five simple keys, right?

The commonalities of the game's best players, yes. :-)

I don't do it as an expectation to hit a good shot, it's more just in fun. But at the same time it allows my brain to calm down a little and get back to a more simplified swing thought when I go back to my swing. The "swing like a pro" mentality is not at all reliable. But after I hit one like that (good or bad) I'm usually more relaxed and the swing is less forced on following shots.

Also, it was more a point of perception change as well. I'm not thinking about any of my positions from my first-person view. I was switching it to as if I was watching myself on camera. So I'm basically only look at the ball, and the peripheral is all 3rd person. Kinda cool.

I actually don't mind having a lot of swing thoughts like I posted in my OP. 95% of the time I don't get worked up over it or anything. It works for me. My misses typically come from fatigue and a different associated set of physical feeling in my extremities before, during, and following through with the swing. But sure, hopefully one day I'll be able to go out without MUCH of a swing thought and play well. But I'm not there yet.

    • My flop shots are 6-7° down (AoA). Does that answer it? 😄  The longer answer is… You have to be able to do both shots.
    • I hope you don't mind me raising this one from the dead. I got shortgamechef's video access thing for a few months in 2024. I watched his yip fix videos (the general gist is similar to the first video above, but with a lot more detail) and it made a lot of sense. I was working on it in my backyard off a mat for a while and my yippy thing was mostly gone. Aside from anything else, the flop shot using that technique is so easy and controllable. But I got onto a golf course for the first time of the year and found myself by the green on a downslope with the ball sitting down a little in the rough and I was, not to put too fine a point on it, f***ed. Shallow is all well and good from a good flat lie and I understand it, but you can't make that your be all and end all. I still don't know if it's a good idea to use steep all the time or just when you need to. I have a hard enough time with one technique, let alone too.  Just got a pitching skillest lesson with Erik and unless I misunderstood things some, he wants me a bit steeper. @iacas - where do you fall on the steep vs shallow argument and how do you vary it according to need?
