Does it seem like threatening to break 60 is a more common occurrence this year?

Two 58s this year, today, a 50 foot putt make would have etched another 59 in the record books today.  Does it seem like more players are sniffing sub 60 or is the same as it's always been? On the one hand deeper fields, players are probably playing more aggressively. On the other hand, the feeling is just based on anecdotal evidence, a gut feel.

Yes, it does.  Heightened sensitivity, perhaps?  Or is this another instance of random fluctuation that our brains prefer to interpret otherwise?

In der bag:
Cleveland Hi-Bore driver, Maltby 5 wood, Maltby hybrid, Maltby irons and wedges (23 to 50) Vokey 59/07, Cleveland Niblick (LH-42), and a Maltby mallet putter.                                                                                                                                                 "When the going gets tough...it's tough to get going."

Or is it social media making us aware, whereas before it existed, a guy sniffing 59 doesn't get any eyeballs?

Yes. Not only that but you had two near 62s in majors and two guys get to -20 in a major, something never done before. I think not only are the fields deeper, but technology is definitely leading to better scores, particularly with softer courses. Fast greens and windy conditions are still the kryptonite for keeping scores close to par, as seen at Augusta and Oakmont this year.
