Need a new 3 wood for christmas.. that actually agrees with me.

Last spring I swore off using a 3 wood for several reasons and substituted a 16 degree hybrid for my 3 wood. While I was mostly happy with the results, I reckoned I could eak out a few more yards with the somewhat longer shafted 3 wood. So, I kept my eyes peeled for a 3 wood easier to hit than the two highly rated Callaway 3 woods I owned.

To my great surprise, after reading a superb review on this very fine website, I demoed the new Titleist 906F4 15.5 degree wood. I was thrilled with the ease I had in getting the ball up off the fairway. It was also easy to control other aspects of ball flight with this club ( at least for me - read the review ). And I say I was surprised because I never expected to own, use and love a Titleist fairway wood, at least not while my handicap still hovers north of 16. But it would appear that Titleist has produced an easy to hit and control wood that a broad range of golfers can use with great confidence. Since you asked for suggestions, I offer you these thoughts on the 906F4 ( not to be confused with the 906F2, a wood geared more toward the lower handicap player ). I recommend you demo one of these fine clubs.

I have a Ping Rapture 3 wood. It's awesome off the tee but sucks off the deck. But that's just me. I don't have the swing speed for a strong 3 off the deck. Probably a lot of people shouldn't hit 3w off the deck when 5w is sooo much easier.

After running through used 3-woods for most of the summer, I finally settled on the Mizuno F-60. It's weighted well, I think, and also solid and reasonably forgiving. And for what it's worth, I find it to be a nice looking club - nice shape, size, and a very clean appearance at address (no alignment aid).

On a separate thread, I read that a few people thought it played very much like the Titleists that are recommended above. I have not played the Titleists, so I cannot offer a comparison. Good luck.

I picked up a used Adams tight lies strong 3 wood mid-season this year. Fairway, rough, off the tee, doesn't matter, it's a real rocket launcher. And, it's as easy to hit as my "go to" persimmon 5w. Lovely club...

I currently have the Titleist 904F2 with Graffaloy Blue Comp NT Stiff shaft in it and all I can say is wow. It is incredibly long, easy to hit off the deck and very controllable. I actually hit this club within 20 yards of my driver off the tee. It has a very classic shape and inspires confidence at address. The only other 3 wood that I've tried that I've liked as well is the Tour Edge Exotics CB2 3 wood. That thing is a cannon off the tee. I would decide if you are using this club from the tee or fairway more to decide on what ones you can eliminate and which ones you should consider.

I love myTaylormade R7 steel. It's got a pretty shallow face, so it's better off of the deck than from the tee, in my opinion.

They've discontinued them, if I'm not mistaken, so you can find them in discount bins at major golf chains and places lke Sports Authority.

I have a Taylormade r7 Ti. Love it. Do you not like the F-50. If you do but want a new wood, try the F-60.

My favorite is actually two year old Ping G5. You can probably get one pretty cheap. Otherwise my brother has a Mizuno F-60 4 Wood. For whatever reason everyone that has hit that club loves it. I've played with several who are 30+ handicaps and by the end of the round they are using his off the tee and off the deck. It's got about the same distance that my 3 wood does.

loved the r7 Steel, really wanted a R7 ti but was waiting for the price to go down and never did and then got a Callaway X 3 wood....hated it, and regretted getting rid of the r7 steel. NOW, I use a Tour Edge Exotics CB2 fairwood wood and that thing is nice. I love it. Off the tee, and off the deck it's great. I highly recommend it. Check out eBay for them, they are pretty easy to find.

    • I'm not sure you're calculating the number of strokes you would need to give correctly. The way I figure it, a 6.9 index golfer playing from tees that are rated 70.8/126 would have a course handicap of 6. A 20-index golfer playing from tees that are rated 64/106 would have a course handicap of 11. Therefore, based on the example above, assuming this is the same golf course and these index & slope numbers are based on the different tees, you should only have to give 5 strokes (or one stroke on the five most difficult holes if match play) not 6. Regardless, I get your point...the average golfer has no understanding of how the system works and trying to explain it to people, who haven't bothered to read the documentation provided by either the USGA or the R&A, is hopeless. In any case, I think the WHS as it currently is, does the best job possible of leveling the playing field and I think most golfers (obviously, based on the back & forth on this thread, not all golfers) at least comprehend that.
