Mission Hills Country club in Illiinois. On a nice Saturday in Chicago, every single course was full except this. Not one person there at 1PM.  Greens were thick rough, sand was extremely rocky, tee boxes were brown and cut up.

It's been a few years, but my vote is for Holly Ridge Golf Course, Harbinger NC. Recent reviews on it don't suggest much improvement.

Roughly half of every green on the course was burned to dirt. Fairways were equally grass-less with massive ant hills on a number of them. Somehow I had to try to hit my shot through one of these ant hills three times that day. Low strung electrical wires ran across the property and created an obstacle on five to six holes. The few water hazards were choked with toxic-looking algae. The carts were barely operational and the cashier gave us grief for booking thru GolfNow.

Before seeing this place, there were a couple of courses up my way that I thought were poor. They have nothing on this joint.

This place is really not worth it at any price.

Every place I have ever played had some redeeming features.  Usually goat tracks have low costs and uncrowded conditions.

If I were looking for "The Worst" it would need to be fairly pricey, have atrocious conditions and be so crowded so one faced a 5-6 hour round.  Fortunately, I have not run into that place yet.

I'd agree with you for the most part, but there are some exceptions out there. The course I mentioned is relatively low cost, but not low cost enough. It wasn't even uncrowded (for some reason). Literally not worth the gas.

To be sure, I found a new appreciation for our local "goat tracks".

    • My flop shots are 6-7° down (AoA). Does that answer it? 😄  The longer answer is… You have to be able to do both shots.
    • I hope you don't mind me raising this one from the dead. I got shortgamechef's video access thing for a few months in 2024. I watched his yip fix videos (the general gist is similar to the first video above, but with a lot more detail) and it made a lot of sense. I was working on it in my backyard off a mat for a while and my yippy thing was mostly gone. Aside from anything else, the flop shot using that technique is so easy and controllable. But I got onto a golf course for the first time of the year and found myself by the green on a downslope with the ball sitting down a little in the rough and I was, not to put too fine a point on it, f***ed. Shallow is all well and good from a good flat lie and I understand it, but you can't make that your be all and end all. I still don't know if it's a good idea to use steep all the time or just when you need to. I have a hard enough time with one technique, let alone too.  Just got a pitching skillest lesson with Erik and unless I misunderstood things some, he wants me a bit steeper. @iacas - where do you fall on the steep vs shallow argument and how do you vary it according to need?
