So, I played at a new course for me yesterday, La Torretta Resort in Montgomery, TX. It was in phenomenal shape considering the winter we had and compared to some of the more "upscale" courses in the area. Anyway, I am still struggling with confidence off the tee. I hit only 3 fairways the whole round, and this is a tough course to play from off the fairway. I had to punch out about 6 times, it was brutal.

My takeaway from yesterday: Shot an 89 (pretty good for my recent play), NEED to work on tee shots, hybrid and long irons are my bread and butter, having a hard time controlling accuracy for my 8,9,PW and GW, short game is pretty good, putting is almost perfect (31 putts with one 3 putt from a terrible read). I am going to work on doing whatever it takes to hit the fairway off the tee even if I have to hit a 3i every damn time.

Not a bad score? It would be one of my better ones.

If I had trees on my left and right, I would probably tee off with a 4i or something that keeps it straight. Just started doing this, and this strategy really works well.

Like the idea of this thread is a nice way to share and learn from each others experiences.

Will introduce myself a little, My name is Anthony, I am 30 years and I have been playing golf since April 2013 just about hit one year playing the game now. I really wish I had taken up the sport at a younger age as most do. I joined my local golf club (Kirkbymoorside Golf Club) last August and was given a handicap of 25, since then I have only played in 3 handicap qualifiers as It was almost end of season after I returned from holiday in September. I have got my handicap down to 21 and I am hoping to drop it another few shots in the next following weeks as our comps start running again.

What am I Working on??

I am currently trying to iron out a hook which I have developed over the last few months, I was struggling to make progress then last week something clicked and its getting under control quite well now (touch wood it stays that way). I am also working on my short game quite a bit as I see this as a key to getting consistent, my putting was the worst part of my game but is slowly getting there).

Last 3 Round's Verdict

last 3 rounds have been going well shot 37,39 and 42 Stableford points playing of 21. Putting has been quite strong had 36 putts today does not sound great but had a decent amount of GIR. Accuracy with my 58w and 52w is getting quite nice now, just need to start holing more from 6-10ft as first putt instead of a two putt. One thing I have noticed is I am still struggling a little on my long irons / fairway wood/hybrid. I tend to hit down on the ball and take a divit but I think with these low loft clubs I can sometimes fail in my set up or something and hit to much down in to the ground.

O man, it wall went sideways at the range last night. The worst range session in years. I couldn't get anything going.

I know that feeling all too well!!!    After starting out the year with several rounds in the high 80's, the wheels completely came off the bus over the past couple of weeks.................    The sad part is, my problems can be primarily traced to spending a whole round playing with a guy (who who typically shoots in the high 70's) tell me how I was standing too close to the ball.............     I let that get in my head (I know I shouldn't have) and BAM!  I stopped hitting anything decent and started having back pains (seems to be the month for that, huh?) which have complicated matters even worse because once it starts hurting, an already bad round is only going to go further south.   So now, I am just working on getting myself back to the address position I used to be in, so I can hopefully get back on track..   The moral of my story is, don't listen to anybody but your instructor...............

I'm in the same boat. Its a physical thing. I started running again. I also did a little lifting. Sore arms, plus sore legs, equal horrible swing.

Everything is back on track. As back on track as I can get it. They only thing is i have a massive gap between my 5i and my 4hyb. I don't have exact number to tell you guys but I'm guessing about 20 to 25 yards. Any thoughts? Worry, don't, how you would deal with it.

That depends upon how far you hit them and how far you hit your approach irons. If you have 120 to 160 clubs and you can drive 250 then you pretty much make any standard par 4, and shouldn't really need to worry about the gap because those clubs are probably used for par 3 off the tee anyway.

If you grip own 1 inch on your hybrid, you may hit about 10 yards or less, YMMV.    I carry 6 & 4i.   I grip down on 4i to get 5i distance.

Welcome to the thread.   You got age going for you.  I started golf at 48 and it's been two steps forward and two steps back, sometimes one step or 3 steps back.

Yeah I can imagine I guess we are all in the same boat wishing we took it up as a child.

I wonder if starting as a child really is what makes the difference?

What I am questioning is if a kid that has no native talent in golf decides he wants to do it, then works really hard at it. How far can he or she go? Can they get better than if they started 30 years later? If we look statistically at the kids playing golf, yes they are better. However, It might also be because the kids who don't play well quit earlier on.

Contrast that with if you have talent in golf and start a little later in life, could you still meet your potential? Or is it too late, so to speak?

I did many things throughout my life. I did most of the things boys like doing when they have a forest in their backyard. Tools and weapons played a very big role in any activity. Never did any sports other than PE in grade and middle school. Then I jumped into varsity sports in high school. Later on cycling, triathlons, rock climbing, mountaineering (many years doing this), snow boarding, skiing, archery again, and now golf.

Not really that positive that had I started at a young age if I would be doing any better than I could get now.

Would I have given up any of the other activities for golf when I was young? Not sure about that either, because they were experiences I would not trade out for anything.

So, it is hard to say if starting as a child really makes that much difference in reaching your potential in golf.

IMO (and from personal experience on another sport which I was trained by a national team coach since age 10), someone who trained at golf at age 7 for 3 years will have so much advantage than a person who trained golf at age 17, 27, 37, etc..  Of course, there are exceptions (but not me).

Let me guess, FITA Archery?

LOL.  Archery is your thing, not mine.   Are you better at archery than golf?  Which one did you start earlier?  Was golf harder?

I did Archery when I was a kid, then picked it up again when my son decided he wanted to do it. That is, he made a bow and shot a homemade arrow through a wall, and my wife decided for him. He did a few National Tournaments, but now likes golf more. I am better at Archery, but did it for a total of 5 years? I feel like another two years and I can get reasonably decent at golf.

Our whole family plays golf, we just need to get my wife out on the course more often.

Golf is much harder for me, but my kids both picked it up pretty quickly. They just stagnated because of bad coaching, which I am hoping to remedy now.

Had a great round yesterday, finished 83 (Par 70) (was +3 after 9) hit 10 GiR, 6 FiR and 32 Putts. Could of had my first sub 80 score but had 2 balls out of bounds. Went for a lesson after the round and golf coach was happy with how my swing has came on since he last seen me, said I mainly need to work on keeping my left wrist flat through impact as I am breaking it quite often. Hopefully can have a round like this on Saturday is first qualifier comp of the seaon.

Played Buffalo today, and played to my handicap. I suppose that is OK, but I am sure I could have done better.

The course was generally in better shape than last I played her, but the greens had just been aerated and did not roll well at all. Think I lost at least 4 strokes to green conditions. Wind 10 to 15 and gusts to 20.

Problems with good contact throughout the set, though nearly all full shots had good direction (100% on fairways) and reasonable shape (some a bit too much draw, but I have been working on getting some little bit of draw rather than my usual fade). The less than desirable contact led to nearly all shots 10 or 15 yrds shorter than planned, thus the miserable GIR, but as said previously direction was generally good.

My new Fybrid 19.5 put me three yards short of the notorious 13th with good shape (want a slight draw here to avoid front trap). Chip and 2 putt for bogey, but with true rolling greens I am confident I could have made the 5 footer.

All in all a 'pert fair day, great to be out on the course. Saw a few things work, and a few more that could use a bit of work. :-P

What a difference a day makes..   Yesterday, I had the worst round in over a year (101)..    I spent nearly the whole day looking up before hitting the ball and as a result, I made a ton of bad shots.....    Today, I started the round by telling myself I was going to see the club make contact with the ball and with few exceptions, I was able to do that.   I shot an 88, with 9 FIR, 5 GIR, 34 putts, 4 pars and a birdie.

Great work, if you can keep your tee shots up at this level you will be giving yourself great chances on GiR
