I've been Playing Golf for: On and off for 8 years
My current handicap index or average score is: 87-92
My typical ball flight is: Driver: High and straight with occasional hook. Iron: Low, Draw.
The shot I hate or the "miss" I'm trying to reduce/eliminate is: Thin iron shots.

Videos:

Thos thin shot has been haunting me for weeks now. The video was rather last minute and on my iPhone 7. I'll start getting better video and the other angle with my GoPro. My biggest issue for a while now is inconsistent iron contact. I'll hit 1 crisp shot for every 5 thin shots with an occasional fat shot. Something I noticed after watching the video is my head moves backwards at impact a couple inches. I think I'm making a slight flipping move at contact as well trying to get my ball "up." I noticed I had my irons buried in my palm as well so hopefully getting my grip back in my "fingers" will help. Any criticism is welcome!

My driver swing feels much more comfortable lately and I've been hitting it well. I don't get a ton of distance because if I swing at full speed, I'll slice it away. As I said above, I'll try to get better quality and different angles but this is a start!

Alright so I got some more swing vids. Got a side and frontal this time. I had a very good practice session and had the best contact with my irons that I've had in months. I watched and really focused on Keys 1&2 and it helped tons. The rear view shot came out a little left but felt really good. The frontal view shot flew very straight with similar distance.

That's still relevant. Toe line…

What drills are you doing to work on Keys #1 and #2?

For #1 I put my head against a wall and just focused on mocking my takeaway without moving my head. I placed my Gatorade bottle on the ground as well during some swings and tried to focus on not seeing the front or back of it. On the range I just really kept the thought in my mind and it translated well to my swing. For #2 I got the office chair and focused on pushing it away with my hips. I don't have that half moon squishy ball but I used a hardened foam ball under my right foot to feel it compress during swings. I also placed a tee in front of my ball and focused on trying to push the tee away after contact with the golf ball.

I want to keep focusing on 1 & 2 because controlling my low point is something I have a problem with and it's definitely helping! I'll try to correct my camera angles next video session!

Have you tried the "hit and stop" drill, or the preset drill (same thing):?

    • Hello Golfing Buddies, It has been awhile since I posted but I am the Retired Old Man that asked for advice because I suffered two "T.I.A.'s about switching from playing right handed to playing left handed.  I purchased a Callaway Edge Left handed golf clubs. I changed the grips to oversize grips.  Well, two weeks ago and still at 79 years old, I shot a 44 and 47 on a small course in my hometown.  I am currently changing my shafts from regular flex to Senior flex.  So, you can see' it can be done! So, you other old timers; get with the program! Blessings to all of you. Retired Old Man (Terry Warner)

    • Probably since the golfer has to swing the club back and up. The hands have to move back and up. You can feel them go back and up just by turning the shoulders and bending the right arm, because it brings your hands towards your right shoulder.  The difference is if you maintain width or not. Less width means a shorter feeling swing path so the more you need to lift the arms. Being as someone who gets the right arm bend at 110+ degrees, it's 100% a timing issue. I am use to like a 1.5+ second backswing. It probably should be like 1 second at most. Half a second or more will feel like an eternity. I have had swings where I keep my right arm straighter and I am still trying to time the downswing based on the old tempo.  Ideally, for me, it is probably going to be a much quicker and shorter (in duration) backswing, while keeping the right elbow straighter. Which also means more hinging to get swing length without over swinging.

    • I'm currently recuperating from surgery, so no golf, but have been thinking about this quite a bit. This and the don't overbend the right arm thing. It's hard for me to even pose the position, so I'm not 100% sure, but I feel like it's impossible to have the right humerus along the shirt seam and not overbend your right arm, unless your hands are down near your hips. If the left arm is up at or above the shoulder plane and your right arm is bent less than 90 degrees, then your right humerus has to raise or your hands will get pulled apart. Your left hand can't reach your right hand unless either the right upper arm is up or the right arm is overbent. Is that right? If it is, then focusing on not overbending the right arm would force you to raise the humerus. And actually thinking further on it, if you do overbend your right arm, then you're basically forcing your upper arm down or forcing your left arm to bend. Since (for me at least) bending the left arm too much is not something I think I need to worry about, it means that the bend in the trail arm is really the driving force behind what happens to the right humerus.
