David Duval: Can He Make A Comeback?

I checked the PGA Stats site and saw Duval went from 882nd to 142nd in world ranking this week, and from 204th to 82nd on the PGA 2009 Money list.

I do not know about you folks, but I have always found David's interviews to be thoughtful, informative, and different from those of other golfers. Here is what I mean from Monday's interview:

"It may be arrogance, but this is where I feel like I belong. I stand before you certainly happy with how I played, but extremely disappointed in the outcome. I had no question in my mind I was going to win the tournament."

How many other golfers would be so candid, and so well-spoken in articulating how they felt?

I agree with you. To be honest, I did not think that he would make it back. It is so difficult to do that, and golf history is full of players who lost their swing and game and never regained them---eg. Ralph Guldahl, Chip Beck, Ian Baker Finch, etc. David is right in what he said----he does not necessarily want to be considered a role model, BUT------------if there is something to be learned from his experience, then it is simple---do NOT give up---believe in yourself.

Interesting. I was certainly wondering where his head was down the stretch. Of course I was in class at the time so I could actually see him.

If Duval is able to complete this comeback and one could argue that he perhaps he has based on that single result. I don't think I can recall anything like it in golf, but it would perhaps be reminiscent of Andre Agassi's fall in tennis. Agassi went from No. 1 to No. 122 and had to play in in some satellite tournaments before ultimately winning the French Open out of nowhere. His fall wasn't as long as Duval's, but tennis careers are much more compressed.

Duval makes the cut at The Buick- maybe we can look forward to a nice top 25 finish this weekend. Id like to see him make the FedEx playoffs, its definitely not out of the question!

It was great to see Duval make the cut although a disappointing up and down round yesterday meant he bearly scraped in... was watching on Shot Tracker, what the hell happened at 18?!?!?

Now I hope he will just let loose and be aggressive this weekend and see what happens... got nothing to lose!

If he played regularly until the playoffs I'd say he has an outside chance of qualifying but he's not playing at either Bridgestone or the Reno-Tahoe Open next week (as of this moment) and at the moment he doesn't qualify for the PGA Championship... thats alot of points he's missing out on. That leaves Wyndham and by then he could be well off the pace in terms of points.

Guess his real priority is securing his card for next year... I think he's run out of exemptions and I doubt he'd have the desire to slave away through Qualifying School if he fails to make it... as the first poster said in this thread- it's do or die time for Duval! Certainly hope he pulls through, the pro golf world would be boring to me if he was no longer involved!


Double-D birdied 5 holes in a row today, 8 overall for a 67 and is really looking solid. Good for Duval, and I'm starting to believe he may win again on tour if he keeps this up. I hope so anyway.

I've grown up with DD. I run into his Dad on Sundays at our club playing in our Men's Tourney and DD will occasionally grace us with his presence. He's one hell of a player. I really hope that he can get back to his old self again. He's been playing good and bad. It's time for the bad to diminish. Growing up here in Jacksonville/Ponte Vedra Beach you just are a DD fan. Watching him win the TPC(The Players as everyone else knows it but us locals still call it the TPC) was one of the coolest things. Him and Fred Funk being from here and winning that tourney is so special. DD growing up here and going to the TPC every year and them finally winning it for himself was just so cool to see and I was so glad I was there on Sunday to watch him raise that trophy. Remembering walking though the halls of Episcopal High School seeing him, knowing he was going to be on tour one day, and then seeing him win "our" tourney here is something I'll never forget. I remember in Study Hall asking the golf coach who was our teacher for study hall if David was ever going to go pro......... he said, "Oh he'll go Pro, and he'll win ALOT." I've never forgotten that, and glad it came true. I just hope DD can get it going again. I admire him for what he did for his wife and taking the time off. Nothing is more important than family, even the PGA tour.

I'm sorry to say but that's pretty ignorant. How do you know how much "heart" he has? If he didn't have "heart" then why the hell is he back out there again trying to play competitive golf? Why isn't he just staying at home and working? Some people on the internet just baffle me.

He already proved he didn't. He quit working on his game in his prime after he got his major. This is a lack of desire and heart. Yeah he's back, he got some it back. But you can never get back those lost years.

Dude.... you're clueless. He quit to TAKE CARE OF HIS WIFE! His wife had a difficult preg. and was bed ridden during the whole preg. How is taking care of your wife not having heart? If anything he has more heart than you do. It was a simple choice. Learn some facts about people before you make assumptions. You know the old saying about making assumptions right?
