Hi guys,

I'm at my mother's home cleaning out my stuff before she moves to a new place for retirement. One of the things I have to clear out are the two sets of golf clubs my father has left behind before he passed away a long time ago. Problem is I don't know much about golf clubs, so I wanted to write here to get some opinions.

In general there are two brands in there, Mizuno and Honma. Both sets have a pretty complete set of irons from both brands, with Honma having 2 more irons, the 10 and 11. The Mizuno irons have Notus written on it and the Honma irons have LB-606 written on it. The Mizuno set of drivers seem more uniform (they look like they are the same set) where as the set of Honma drivers look less uniform (seems like they were bought separately or in smaller sets).

Any tips? I have attached two photos. Not all the Honma drivers look like that one but there are two that look like that one. The others look more plain and normal. The Mizuno drivers pretty much all look like the 3 that is attached.

Thanks,

Horace

Horace,

The value of older clubs depends on collectibility. I would do an eBay search to see if anyone is selling them. My guess is they wouldn't be worth that much unfortunately.

The other thing you could do is donate them. I'm not sure where you are located, but here in the Boston area we have The First Tee, a group which works with youths and teaches them about golf. They except club donations and welcome full sets.

lastly, if there is any sentimental value, you could save one club. I had the putter head of my late father-in-law's set refinished as a gift for my wife. I know others that have kept one of their Dad's clubs as well.

Sorry, I left out the most important part! :~(

I want to keep one of the sets, a full set, for myself to play with.

Not sure which to choose! I did some ebay searching and the price varies quite a bit between different listings.

@horace I think the Honma irons are a little newer.  I honestly couldn't say which are better (I've never hit a Honma, but understand they make nice clubs)... but if it were me, I'd hang onto the Mizuno irons.  I like Mizuno (have played their irons for 8+ years now), and those are a pretty slick old set.

I think it's cool you found your Dad's old sticks and will be able to enjoy them in his memory!

The only way to find out is to play both of them and see which one you like better! I am a Mizuno fan, but the other one looks nice too.

    • Feel like you are left side dominant. Keep the back of your glove running through impact. Keeps leading edge down without digging. You will pick them clean with some zip if the grass is nice and generally acceptable results off anything less than ideal. Works with both hingy or dead hand pitches and chips.
    • Day 52 (30 Apr 26) - Had planned a solo round, got invited to be part of trio that included a fmr mini tour pro.  Was fun playing back a set of tees and having to stay in my game plan. Both were very engaging and encouraging in the round.  A good day in working through and making smarter shot choices.
    • Day 576 - 2026-04-30 Put my playlist on and slowed down a little as things were meh. Mostly got to an exaggerated P6 and hit from there.
    • I mean, a golfer is trespassing and damaging property. So, golf rules don’t supersede state laws. 😉 Like, if it isn’t marked and is off golf property. The right thing to do is take an unplayable lie or take stroke and distance.  Also, this is a liability for the course. The homeowner could easily say the course is liable for damage done because they knowingly didn't mark their boundaries which allowed golfers to trespass and damage property.
    • Interestingly enough, if the course (the Committee in Rules terms) doesn't mark the boundaries, there is nothing out of bounds.  I realize that neighboring homeowners would take a dim view of golfers whacking balls from their backyards, but that's what the Definition of Out of Bounds requires. "All areas outside the boundary edge of the course as defined by the Committee."
