A friend and I are going to start a golf course site. You know, listings of golf courses in your area along with ratings, some information, pictures, etc. Most of the ones out there suck.

Here's our feature list so far. Tell me what you think! What would you want in such a site?

Features

  • Listing of all local golf courses (and ranges)
  • Allow for user accounts to rate each course
  • Listing of fees, yardage, tees, course designer
  • Yard Sale – Classifieds (maybe)
  • Star Ratings like iTunes
  • Course Layout photos
  • Name of pros and assitant pros
  • Cost and memberships – are they available?
  • Public or private? Semi?
  • Do they have a range? Cost? Hours? Rules?
  • What services do they offer? Swing training? Club fitting?
  • What facilites are available? Putting green? Chipping green?
  • Lesson – are they offered? By whom? How much?
  • Directions (with Google Maps) and phone number
  • Listing of events and tournaments taking place – who are they open to? Cost? Date? Details

What would you add? Subtract? Modify?

Allowing for user accounts to rate each course is a great idea. I would suggest users be able to rate each course on several criteria (value, difficulty, condition, etc.) that add up to a total rating. I'd love to have that sort of info available to determine which courses are worth playing and which aren't worth the time and $. Good luck with the site.

the one that doesn't suck (and I'm using it all the time) is golfcourse.com.

From there I read the "review" section, after filtering out a few idiots you'll get a good idea on how good the course really is. I think having all the other information is cool, but is virtually unmanagable - and once a few of the items get out-dated - it's useless. What will be REALLY cool (I was thinking about setting a website for it myself...) would be current course conditions section. The logistics of it of course is a nightmare, even you're limited to a local area, but this is something I'd love to have on the internet i.e. aerration, closed due to rain, all tee times sold out, outing, maintenance closure etc... Targets people who are looking for a place to play and don't want to call 20 different courses asking if they're open etc.

You know, I occasionally drive the beverage cart when we are short-staffed up at school. We are a dry campus though and don't sell beer. I guess I would get terrible ratings. At home though, when I worked at a country club in the summers, they old guys had a shirt made for me that said "beer bitch."

Not sure if that's a compliment
