I'm playing in a matchplay tournament today at my local course, and this is the first time I've ever played in an official club tournament, not just a tournament with friends..

I guess I don't really know what is legal and what it not...

can I take a cart?

can I use my GPS?

Ask them. :-)

I'd be very surprised if the answer to both isn't "yes" though.

Good luck, have fun, and don't forget to let us know how you did in the Tournament Play thread!

Based on the Rules of Golf, you can take your cart unless there's a specific rule forbidding it, which would be surprising.  You may NOT use your GPS unless there's a specific rule allowing it.  At this stage, most courses specifically allow GPS and laser devices.  Here's the suggested local rule for distance measuring devices:

Quote

"(Specify as appropriate, e.g., In this competition, or For all play at this course, etc.), a player may obtain distance information by use of a distance-measuring device. If, during a stipulated round, a player uses a distance-measuring device to gauge or measure other conditions that might affect his play (e.g., elevation changes, wind speed, etc.), the player is in breach of Rule 14-3."

See Item 5 in Appendix IV for more information:

Thanks...    I just shot an email to the assistant pro.   he said all good on both.

little bit of a relief as I don't even have a range finder.   pacing off distances in my first tournament doesn't seem optimal....

A lot of tournaments forbid using a cart. It's in the conditions of the competition.

Local amateur stroke- and match-play events, US Kids Golf events, AJGA events… some club championships or other events (not the ones during which beer is consumed, which may not leave any events at some clubs), etc.

A lot of events forbid them in the CoC. (Many more don't, but they're the club level "events" and not the bigger or somewhat serious "tournaments".)

I would highly recommend looking into a golf range finder. I found it elevated my game to a next level. Our depth perception is not what we think it is, and my guess is I was overestimating distance, and found myself coming upshort often, or grabbing the wrong club.
