My Swing (Tony Ly)

Hi, I've  been golfing for a couple months now and still really struggle with my swing. Mainly I either top the ball or hit way behind it. One of my major issues is I have a " chicken wing ". I also have been told I have a " reverse pivot ". Also on my backswing me left knee does a very odd thing and kind of buckles inwards. Any help is greatly appreciated.

I've been Playing Golf for: couple months
My current handicap index or average score is: no idea
My typical ball flight is: low
The shot I hate or the "miss" I'm trying to reduce/eliminate is: topping the ball or hitting it fat

Welcome to The Sand Trap and thanks for posting.

A couple of things I would recommend to work on are keeping your body centered in the back swing and improving your flexibility in the backswing. Check out the thread below. When you drift back during the back swing, you have to move even further forward on the downswing to get your weight forward at impact. This can cause fat shots and topped shots, which have the same cause, hitting behind the ball.

To improve flexibility, practice the exercise described in #4 in the first post of this thread. Do it every day for a month. You can do it without a club do at work, home, etc. Focus on the stretch for your shoulders and hips  If you can do it in front of a mirror, even better. When doing mirror work, check your form too.

Lastly, practice using the method described in the thread below. It is really hard to correct mechanics at full speed. Good luck and have fun.

Hi , thank you for the helpful tips. On the point about moving my body away from the target on my backswing , the reason I do that is because I was told that I have a reverse pivot on my backswing so I tried to change that by leaning away from the target at address. In this video you will see how my backswing was before.

I kinda liked your "old" swing more.

It was NOT a reverse pivot. If anything, it was almost too much of the opposite of a reverse pivot - you pushed too much weight back during the backswing, and then made it go forward during the downswing.

Almost nobody has an actual reverse pivot: weight forward on the backswing, weight back on the downswing.

Thank you. Looks like I need to switch back to my old swing and work on proper hip turn as suggested. Any idea why my left leg does the weird thing during my backswing as seen here?

It may be because your left foot is strait. Try flaring it out 30 degrees. That makes it more stable and allows your hips to rotate more.

No idea. Looks like it's learned, because you didn't do it in the video in post #5.

I am taking lessons at my local course and am doing a little better now. My instructor says my biggest issue is that my body lifts on impact instead of staying down. He said it is because my lead shoulder is lifting up on my downswing which causes my head and body to raise up . He has me shifting my shoulder towards the target at the beginning of my downswing but it has not seem to help. I keep lifting as you can see in the photos. My other issue is my " chicken wing " after impact. ( The guy behind me is NOT my instructor ) He kept telling me my swing is good I think just to make me feel better. :)
