David Saari’s Lateral Hazard is not a golf book but rather a murder mystery with a golf setting.  Aspiring tour pro, Samantha “Sam” Williamson takes a job at the fictional Snake River Golf Club (MN) and soon finds herself in the center of a murder mystery involving around her step mother.  From there the story takes a number of twists and turns which keeps the reader in the dark until the conclusion.

Lateral Hazard is an easy and pleasant read.  There is enough golf-related material to show David can find his way around a golf course yet non-golfers will find the story does not require an intimate knowledge of the game to enjoy the book.

The story is fast-paced and the opening chapter jumps right into the crime.  As the investigation ensues, the various characters are introduced to the reader and one quickly realizes this is no ordinary murder.  Eventually, "Sam" and her club pro partner must become involved to move the investigation along.

As a casual read, I can recommend Lateral Hazard to TST.  Mr. Saari has two previous novels but unlike some authors, there is no back story that requires one to read the older books.

David Saari’s self-published Lateral Hazard was an enjoyable read. It is a murder mystery that takes place at a golf course in Minnesota. Saari weaves golf into the story but doesn't make it the focal point. For golfers, the familiar setting and references enhance the story a bit, but don't distract. It is well written and an easy read. I would file it under light summer reading.

Character development is very good for the most part. You learn a lot about the characters early on. Sam Williamson, her father Trevor and second wife.  Secondary characters are also developed well. You like or dislike most characters quickly.

I was a bit surprised at the ending. I thought Mr. Saari could have developed the story a bit more to transition into the ending. It was almost as if he left parts out. Great murder mysteries give clues that a reader would have reflected on and thought "Ah! I should have seen that coming!". The clues are subtle and not obvious. Lateral Hazard is missing that element.

For value, at $2.99, it is a bargain. I do recommend it though. Enjoy

David Saari’s Lateral Hazard is an enjoyable read which revolves around a golfing community. The book is only 200+ pages which one can read in a short period without losing interest.
The story begins in an unusual manner and jumps through various timeframes which was somewhat confusing.
As the story develops, I give the author credit to keeping an audience interested and entertained.

For those who like fictional crime stories which are somewhat realistic, readers will enjoy this book.
Anyone who lives in a golfing community can certainly visualize the story with the descriptive manner Dave introduces his material.
While reading, it does reflect somewhat to the everyday operations and events which happen at any club.
Any golfer should relate to the characters in the story, as we all meet or may know people who fit the description in the story.

He has previous novels, "Snowman and Slice" catchy names along with "Lateral Hazard" it is seems obvious he enjoys the game of golf in his real life.
Thank you Dave for giving us the opportunity to read your book.
I give it a thumbs up and will pass the book along to friends to read.

    • Maybe this is what you were getting at?  Doing some math. Comparing JumboMax versus Tour Velvet, standard size in both.  I got the force required using the JumboMax grip, to achieve the same rotational acceleration as the Tour Velvet, is about 1.37 more for the JumboMax grip. Interestingly, the Jumbomax grip is about 17% larger than the Tour Velvet, and 17% lighter for the standard size. I just substituted out the radius and mass of the JumboMax as a ratio of the Tour Velvet's mass and radius. This allows me to cancel out the mass and radius and get a ratio for the force. If you need 100 (force units of your choice) to achieve a certain rotational acceleration, you will need 137 (force units of your choice).  There was another thread on the forum about offset, where it basically just delays closure by some stupidly small amount. A lot of fun math there.  Most golfers have to go from about 90 degrees open clubface at A4 to square at A7. So, having a grip that requires more force to close that clubface might not be the best idea pending the golf swing.  A question is, since the clubface is open at A4, and square at A7. Does that mean you want most of the closure to happen from A4 to let say A6, and not A6 to A7, for better consistently (less timing at impact). Just a thought.
    • This reminds me of the old game Telephone, where someone tells a story to someone, that person tells it to the next person, and after a few re-tellings you see how badly mangled the story gets.  Most golfers learn the rules in a similar fashion, learning from someone who really doesn't know the rules themselves.  This isn't really helped by the fact that many golf professionals aren't all that knowledgeable about the rules.  In addition, most golfers have been told that the Rules are SO complicated and SO difficult to read that they never try to read for themselves. Now, having vented a bit, is there anything in particular you'd like to read?
    • I hope to see more posts from you, @DaveP043, related to your Rules experiences. I was looking at a thread on a golf site. Reading some of the comments and discussion on a Provisional/Lost/Unplayable situation was like listening to fingernails on a chalk board. So many comments such as, "You MUST search for your ball" and "If you find your ball in an unplayable spot, just go play your provisional." It is always amazing to me how little we golfers know of the Rules of Golf.
    • I could use the old man's excuse ... I am on a fixed income. That would be a fib. The event sounds like a great time. My wife and I will be in Brazil for 2 weeks in May and I can't fit this trip into the schedule.
