Hey friends,

I was fortunate enough to be gifted an Optishot2, along with a nice mat and Net Return net, so operation winter swing maintenance is launching in my garage.  Before getting too steep into OptiLand, I was hoping that I might get a bit of help answering a few questions:

  1. Does anyone have experience relying on an Optishot to provide swing feedback?  Or is it better suited to serving as a novelty?
  2. I understand that it will only measure face angle, swing path, and clubhead speed, but can anyone speak to the accuracy of these measured parameters?
  3. It seems the only other measurement tool that is in the same price range is the Mevo.  They obviously measure different things in different ways, but is it worth exploring an exchange of the Optishot for a Mevo (esp. considering space is somewhat cramped in my garage)?

Thanks a ton!

Mevo doesn't seem to like being cramped up. Optishot might be okay for your smaller setup. I use Mevo outdoors, and it seems to like being outside more than inside unless you have a lot of room.

The readings you get from any launch monitor should be taken with a grain of salt anyway. There's nothing like tracking your distances on the course. That's what Arcos or Game Golf are useful for doing.

My recommendation is to just enjoy the system as is, and don't attempt to improve the accuracy much more, otherwise it could be a really expensive proposition to get accurate results.

How would you define cramped up?  If you have 15' between the Mevo and the net you're hitting into, will it give accurate readings?

7 feet behind the ball and at least 40 feet in front. Tried on a 15 to 20 foot net and it gave me higher readings than outside. Compared it to a GC2 at Roger Dunn’s with much more than 40 feet in front and the readings were like outdoor,  a bit higher because the balls were playing balls.

Not true at all. We've done plenty indoors with 21 feet in front, and @DeadMan and about eight other people here on TST who have them now hit them into home nets with good readings.

Last we heard @Lihu your unit was constantly updating itself, dying in the middle of a firmware update, etc.

I imagine those things have resolved themselves, but yours is just one experience of many, and it seems like it's an outlying experience. It's not worth 0 weight, but it isn't all-telling either.

When I say readings are different, it’s not by much at all. Like 1mph or 3 yard differences with driver. I’m looking at averages too. Maybe, I’m just too picky? I’ll get more of an appreciation of their SW as I build my own, I’m sure. . .

So, I might have remembered wrong about the space at Golf Galaxy. Might have only been 12 feet and not 15 to 20? In any case, both Mevo and GC2 read about the same, but the numbers were boosted on the Golf Galaxy machine as compared to Roger Dunn and of course my range data.

Also, the remaining real issue was resolved by Flightscope who looked at the raw data from my unit and pretty much concluded the low smash and low carries relative to actual are due to my use of range balls. Especially since they looked at the data from an ex-long drive friend of mine who only got 1.36 smash factors when he pretty much nailed the shots. Conclusion was the 1 piece range balls are shorter than regular balls and the Mevo reported correctly. SW downloads are much shorter now.

Love the Mevo, just doubtful it would work well in cramped quarters?

@Lihu, c'mon man. Are you this unaware of how you say things?

The guy asked what "cramped" is for use in his home, and you tell him he needs about 50 feet or the readings are "higher"? Without qualifications like "1 MPH" - a completely negligible amount, and for all you know, an accurate one - the mind says "oh, I don't want bad readings, and he's telling me I need 50 feet to avoid bad readings!"

FWIW, you have no idea which ones were actually the most accurate. Particularly since we're talking about a three-yard difference with your driver?!?!

@Lihu, one "scientific" guy to another, c'mon now… either share the actual data or choose your words far more carefully. 3 yards with a driver is almost the very definition of negligible given that there was a human being doing the hitting, not a finely calibrated robot or something.

What SW downloads? There hasn't been one in weeks.

In my experience it works quite well if you meet the requirements.

That said, @Kekeisen

15' from the Mevo to the net is pretty tight. Probably not going to work. At a maximum that's 13' of ball flight, with the Mevo 5' behind you.

I added 3' because we don't hit balls horizontally, so the hypotenuse from the "launch angle" will add a little distance to the flight… that said, 13' is generous because at 10' along the floor, a 13' hypotenuse requires a launch angle of ~39°, which really shouldn't happen with full swings.

I stopped a download about that long ago. It probably just restarted the download and configured the unit. Only took a few minutes.

Agree, it's quite good especially for the money! Much better and any unit even twice the cost.

Just not sure if it will work well enough in his particular situation?
