Hello Everyone,

Went to Golf Galaxy today and bought a 10.5 Rogue with the Aldila Synergy 50 Stiff shaft.  I am seeking some advice here as I was between this shaft and the Project X Even Flow 60, stiff.  They are not that good at GG to fit I find, but I had a gift card, so may not even be in the market for a new driver unless I had the card!

I was on the Callaway website and it seems that the Alidila Synergy 50 stiff is actually 60g in weight, and the Project X Even Flow 60 stiff is 67g, is this accurate.  I feel like 50g is too light, but if it is 60g then that seems about right.

My swing speed is ~97-8 mph, when I get to the high end I'm in the 103 range.  I'm a higher end handicapper.  I haven't taken the wrapping off the club as I wanted to see what you guys may think would be the best way for me to go, given my club head speed and handicap.

Many thanks for your help in advance!

Too bad. Sounds like you found the wrong GG - the one near my house has solid fitters.

That aside, a good fitter would give you data from multiple shafts in a fitting. As far as flex goes, 98 MPH would be within the stiff shaft range for driver.

The Project X will be more robust, especially since it is heavier, and may be harder to handle. Launch monitor data would give you a hint on whether PX or Aldila would be better.

Sorry, but I can't really help you much from the little info you gave us. A fitter can help you more.

How long have you been playing? Have you had any lessons?

I’ve been playing for about a year and take lessons about twice a month. What numbers should i be reviewing on the launch monitor. I may go back and try again before i take the wrapping off the club. I

NJ, you would need to go to a good fitter who can explain key launch monitor data points to you. Here is a PDF that explains the basics of Launch Monitor metrics.

I'm not schooled enough on launch monitors to teach others how to use one.

Carry distance, launch angle, spin rate, AOA, swing speed, ball speed are a few, it will also show ball flight (height - draw or fade) even long foul balls to right field...
They will explain details as to which shaft would best suited for you when using the Trackman...

I think the best advice is to go to a place where they have both shafts and know what they are doing, and hit both. Ideally if they have loaners you could check out to hit on course to back up what you see on the monitor.

Like I have told my kids before, do as I say, not as I do, LOL.

Look up the specs of the two shafts; it will give you the weight by stiffness. A stiffer shaft will be a tad heavier than the nominal. I.E., the stiff in the Synergy might be 57 grams for instance-I made the weight up as an example.

According to PX website, the Evenflow Blue 65 weighs 67 grams in 6.0-I am assuming this is uncut. According to Aldila website, the Synergy blue 50 weighs 60 grams in stiff uncut

So seven grams is not much in a 46 inch driver. More important than the weight will be the bend characteristics. Both are describe as being a mid-launch shaft. Like stiffness, mid-launch is a relative term, and the only way to see which is best for you is to hit them, preferably on a monitor in front of someone who knows what they are doing, and on the course under playing condition.

For what its worth, I like the Evenflow better for me. To me it doesn't play as stiff as some even other PX 6.0 shafts. I cannot verify this, but I think it is sort of a replacement, extension of the LX line which were stiff in the butt and tip but had some softer characteristics in the middle. Caveat, this last paragraph is totally my opinion, not documented.

Depends on the design of the shaft - you just can't go on its weight.

Go back to the GG, at a time when the store is vacant, like in the early afternoon, warm up and spend some time in there looking at numbers. Don't know if you are a high ball player or not, but the 10.5 may be too much loft at that speed depending on your angle of attack and ball position, etc. Look at your launch - 14-16, look at spin of 2000-2100. Get the loft fit first, and then the shaft.

My speed is low 90's, but I play a 9 in a Ping G400. My launch is 16 degrees, Spin is about 2500

    • I'm not sure you're calculating the number of strokes you would need to give correctly. The way I figure it, a 6.9 index golfer playing from tees that are rated 70.8/126 would have a course handicap of 6. A 20-index golfer playing from tees that are rated 64/106 would have a course handicap of 11. Therefore, based on the example above, assuming this is the same golf course and these index & slope numbers are based on the different tees, you should only have to give 5 strokes (or one stroke on the five most difficult holes if match play) not 6. Regardless, I get your point...the average golfer has no understanding of how the system works and trying to explain it to people, who haven't bothered to read the documentation provided by either the USGA or the R&A, is hopeless. In any case, I think the WHS as it currently is, does the best job possible of leveling the playing field and I think most golfers (obviously, based on the back & forth on this thread, not all golfers) at least comprehend that.

    • Yes it's true in a large sample like a tournament a bunch of 20 handicaps shouldn't get 13 strokes more than you. One of them will have a day and win. But two on one, the 7 handicap is going to cover those 13 strokes the vast majority of the time. 20 handicaps are shit players. With super high variance and a very asymmetrical distribution of scores. Yes they shoot 85 every once in a while. But they shoot 110 way more often. A 7 handicap's equivalent is shooting 74 every once in a while but... 86 way more often?
