wedge question?

I just got a new set of irons and it came with a 54 or 55 degree sand wedge, I already had a 56 and im pretty fond of it, it was my first nice club and i can hit it really well. I guess my question is would it make much sense to carry both of them or is it a waste of time?

What are the rest of your clubs, and what uses would you be using the 54 and 56 for? Some people carry a "fairway" sand wedge and "sand" sand wedge, depending on fairway conditions and sand conditions at their course - if they call for opposite levels of bounce. I have, on occasion, carried both 58 and 56 degree wedges.

As you fine tune your game, you'll be able to fine tune your bag as well. I carry three wedges, a PW, 52* and 58*. My 52 I use solely for approach shots from the fairway. My 58 I use for anything from 85 yards and in, to a bunker shot, to a pitch from just off the green. My PW I use from 115-125 approach shots and also bump and runs around the fringe. In time you'll figure out what works best for you. I say carry them all and use them in different situations until you have things sorted out.

If the set you bought is bendable (depends on the material it was made of -- check with the manufacturer) it might be worthwhile to have it bent to something like a 52 degree wedge. However, I would stick with your original wedge. Firstly, you sound awfully confident with it. Secondly, usually the wedge that comes with a set of irons is made just like the irons -- with a large cavity back and mass moved away from the middle of the face. A lot of times they come with insufficient bounce, and insufficient head weight. This really isn't what you want in a wedge. Most traditional wedge heads are much better designed for the wide variety of tasks you are going to ask of it. This includes gliding through the rough, long and short bunker shots, picking the ball off of hardpan, etc. etc.
