Hey guys, I did a quick search with no results (although I would think there is an existing thread on this):

I may be in the market for a fairway wood (5W) and was wondering about the differences (of any real significance) b/w the M1 and M2 models. From what I gather, the M1 has adjustable weights (which I care nothing about) and the M2 is more forgiving. True/False? Any help would be appreciated!

You would just have to hit them side-by-side to find out.

Depends on whether you want adjustability. Would this be a single FW you would carry? Your Bagboy array lists no current FW. Is the TAaron 25*H your longest club other than your driver?

Years ago I did a side-by-side with the Callaway FW offerings, the adjustable RazrFit and the solid-state RazorX Blacks. I couldn't really tell much difference between them. I didn't buy FWs that season, but looking back the RazrXs would have been nice.

I don't care about the adjustability.

Yes, the hybrid is the "longest" club in my bag aside from the driver and there is a fairly large gap in their average distances (240/50-ish vs 180-ish). Of course, if I crush a great driver, I will get it out there 270 and my hybrid will get out there 200, but using my average distances there is 60-70yd gap. To date, I have had so much else to work on (and still do) that my lacking that length club didn't affect me much because I wasn't going to reach many par 5's in two regardless. But now, I feel like having that longer club in the bag may actually be of some help in that department. I've just always struggled with the longer clubs, but I think I'm ready to get a 5W which will hopefully help split the difference.

In looking at FWs, at least try a 3W.HL (TM stuff) or a 4W. Many golfers hit a 4W more reliably - and sometimes longer - than a 3W.

If a 4W worked, you might also add either a 3H or a 4H to give yourself more long-range options. You have an 8.7 HDCP, so this mix might help you more.

Thanks, @WUTiger, I think I'd be willing to try a 4W. I've played a 3H before, but didn't see a big difference in length from my TA 5H, mainly b/c I just hit that so well (for me)....thus my previous reluctance to try another longer club

Last year I took advantage of one of those +50% trade in specials and got a fairway wood.  I hit both the M2 and the M1.  Saw no difference in performance but the M1 looked better to me at address.

i wanted the adjustability as well which I saw you don't care about.  I went with the 3hl because its easier to launch than a 15 degree and just as long.  I also don't need the length a 3 wood would hit it, I'd rather something more in the 4 wood range where I can choke down if need be in that 5 wood distance.

I have the 2016 version of the M1 High Launch 3 wood. I was originally looking for an M2 FW, but I got a great deal on this one last year and I already had a Taylormade adjustment wrench so it was a no brainer for me. I do like having the ability to turn the loft down some, especially if my swing changes and I need less height out of it. Cant do that with the M2.

Its really easy to hit off the fairway, probably because it has slightly more loft than a traditional 3 wood, but in my experience it doesnt balloon up too much or anything. My furthest shot ever with mine was 268 yds, and I average 232 with it based on my GameGolf data.

Price is also something to consider. The M2 will be cheaper, a quick look on 2ndswing.com brought up numerous 2016 M2 models for under $100, and the 2016 M1 model is around $150. Also check on ebay, might be able to score something for even cheaper on there!

    • Day 11: did mirror work for a while. Worked on the same stuff.
    • I'm not sure you're calculating the number of strokes you would need to give correctly. The way I figure it, a 6.9 index golfer playing from tees that are rated 70.8/126 would have a course handicap of 6. A 20-index golfer playing from tees that are rated 64/106 would have a course handicap of 11. Therefore, based on the example above, assuming this is the same golf course and these index & slope numbers are based on the different tees, you should only have to give 5 strokes (or one stroke on the five most difficult holes if match play) not 6. Regardless, I get your point...the average golfer has no understanding of how the system works and trying to explain it to people, who haven't bothered to read the documentation provided by either the USGA or the R&A, is hopeless. In any case, I think the WHS as it currently is, does the best job possible of leveling the playing field and I think most golfers (obviously, based on the back & forth on this thread, not all golfers) at least comprehend that.

    • Yes it's true in a large sample like a tournament a bunch of 20 handicaps shouldn't get 13 strokes more than you. One of them will have a day and win. But two on one, the 7 handicap is going to cover those 13 strokes the vast majority of the time. 20 handicaps are shit players. With super high variance and a very asymmetrical distribution of scores. Yes they shoot 85 every once in a while. But they shoot 110 way more often. A 7 handicap's equivalent is shooting 74 every once in a while but... 86 way more often?
