Good point, however wouldn't the actual distance one hits the club remain relatively the same with identical lofts? By relatively, I mean within 5-7 yards. Thanks

With today’s GI and SGI, and even other styles, maybe not. They are engineered to give more distance as well as forgiveness.

Thank you for that!  Always wondered what those were called..good topic.  I finally got out to the range after almost 6 years and surprisingly hit my irons decent.  I have also decided to put a few irons away.  thinking of replacing the stronger lofted with my hybrids and going down to the 6i and down.

The post you quoted from was almost three years old, and maybe this has already been said, but I would double check the names and clubs they associate with. A mashie niblick is a 7I, not a 5I.

Think I'm going to try 8 clubs a few rounds. D, 5W, 3H, 5,7,9, W, P. If it doesn't work still have the rest of the clubs.

Aren't your 5W and 3H fairly comparable in distance? Sure one may go higher than the other one and land more softly, but personally I would go with:

Dr, 5W, 4H, 6, 8, Pitching Wedge, Sand Wedge and Putter.

[With Pitching Wedge at 46 degrees, part of the iron set and Sand Wedge at 55 degrees in my case. I am thus skipping the Gap Wedge, which is 50 degrees, also in the iron set]

I reckon whatever your preference of clubs is it is more the fact that less is probably more. Mine is D 3H 4 6 7 8 9 irons SW and Putter which is plenty to get round most courses.

3H is a hl 21° so almost a 4H. Experimenting, thinking about a 4W, 7W, 4H down the road.

My 8-9 clubs are D 3H 5 7 9 10 SW LW Putter, using Nickent irons for awhile then try one length 9 W SW LW. Bought a PGM bag for 7-9 clubs that I can carry, plan is to improve fitness as well...

Good luck with the fitness side of your golf.

Thanks, couldn't play today as my shoulders were sore from my workouts to exhaustion. Using Bryson as my inspiration, going to be as strong as I can be while having lessons to keep the swing consistency....

Short experiment, half a dozen times I needed a club that I didn't have with me. Put the other clubs back in the bag. Got by but thought it cost me a few strokes.

Moving to winter golf now, need  lightweight to lug around. So played the winter set up D, 3H, 4,6,8,50° P.

Played really well with these fewer clubs today. Drive for show- get it on the green- and put for £$.

Enjoy whatever you play.

    • Day 468 - 2026-01-11 Loooooong day. Did some work in the patio door (as a mirror) when I got home.
    • I caught a video on this driver; the face tech seems crazy. Looking at the heat map for ball speed, hitting it basically anywhere on the face only loses a few percent ball speed. The surprising and counter intuitive part to me was that for flat faced clubs, ball speed loss is directly proportional to distance loss. For clubs with bulge and roll this is apparently not true. The surprising part of that story being that the max distance potential looks to be a tiny pee sized area for this driver, and I feel in general for drivers. The counter intuitive part being (the myth?) that blade irons have a pee sized sweet spot and missing that tiny spot causes dramatic losses. And that modern drivers, maybe 2017 on, have massive sweet spots and are ultra forgiving. Where in reality, if this heat map data is valid and reliable, it might be a bit of the opposite. This insane tech driver appears to have a pea sized "sweet spot" while Mizuno Pro 241 irons are 28% more forgiving compared to the average of all clubs measured. Not compared to other players irons, compared to all clubs from all categories, players to SGI! The Pro 241 being essentially just a solid chunk of metal with no "tech" at all. Which for me devolves into a whole mess of what is forgiveness really? And in measurable and quantifiable results how many yards, or feet, does that translate into?
