Today was the first day I have ever done the gate drill. Not the "tees on either side of the ball" gate drill I have done that plenty of times. I am talking about the one where you put alignment sticks upright in the ground about 20 feet or so from you and form some "goalpost" like gates to hit through. I read it in LSW, though I know its probably a common drill I just have never done it. My thoughts on this drill are WOW. I used these gates while hitting 7 Iron, 5 Iron, 3 Hybrid, and 3 wood. This drill did a lot for me on all of these clubs. When hitting Irons I really wanted the ball to start over the gates rather than through them and it allowed me to really compress (deform) the golf ball so I could let the club loft do the work for me. That caused me to reply shift my weight forward and I noticed an immediate increase in distance..especially with the 3 Wood (off the tee). It was amazing how much more accurate my shots were (even if they curved) in relation to my target with proper start lines. Seems stupid I know...but was really an encouraging practice session today. My question is...have you ever taken this drill to the course? Obviously, not in a physical manner...but in a mental one? Would it be a good strategy for me to picture these gates in front of me on the golf course in line with my target? Or this is just a. good range drill to get a feel, but not something that should be taken to the course?

I would think if it helped you at practice, and you could duplicate the same mental picture on the course, then why not. It would be worth a try at the very least.

I do something similar when putting to help roll the ball on my chosen line. I get this mental (pretend) picture of a dime about a foot or so in front of the ball.

thanks for the reply. The dime trick sounds like a good one for putting too...I will have to try that.

    • I’m thinking maybe Jason Day read my post. He’s sitting a -3 two off Rory and Burns.
    • Is it only the weekend broadcasts that have a low commercial count?  I feel like it has been a long while since I last watched a Thursday of the Masters, so maybe my recollection is off.  I feel today has a lot more than four minutes per hour of commercials, and far fewer of the fun stories they tell during the Sunday broadcast.
    • I mean, I do slide my hips like 7 inches towards the target before impact. PGA Tour average is like 3 inches. I’m not Scottie Scheffler who can get away with it. 🤣 He slides a ton.  For me, I have to feel like I basically just turn. Though, I’m probably over exaggerating a bit with that one video because I’m really trying to push off with the left leg which sends the hip backwards. Ideally, I would be able to get my weight over to the outside of my left foot at impact and into the finish. It’s probably OK that I can slide about 7 inches as long as it’s like only three by impact.
    • Day 32 (9 Apr 26) - Grandson is on spring break- puts in to play 9 at our home course.  Used it to work on top of horizon target point for drives and approaches…i.e. pick landing zone (fairway, green) , an intermediate target point and finally what standout feature do I want to hit “over” on the horizon (tall pine, home top, flag pole).    Better l-r dispersion w/5 of 7 drives in the short grass.  Nice little addition to the pre-shot routine.
    • I managed to get the full afternoon to watch (Pacific time, so the ESPN broadcast began at noon).  I just saw the first shot I feel like commenting on:  Adam Scott's tee shot on #16 was really good, especially after having what might be the worst kind of Maltese Falcon on #15.    I didn't used to like him, but the past few years he's grown on me quite a bit.
