I’m not sure your friend is doing what you think he’s doing. And maybe you misunderstood what the GC was saying?

I think that hitting upwards just means that the clubhead has passed the bottom of it's arc. I accomplish that by playing the ball forward in my stance with a driver and a little tilt of the shoulders. My buddy looks like he's trying to scoop the ball into the air, but he also has a exaggerated inside-out swing too, and often hits fat with his driver on a teed ball. He does say that's not what he's trying to do, but it started after him telling me about this Golf Channel lesson. It just looks that way to me because he will often reverse pivot, and open his body after hitting by moving his left foot back.

Lol...yeah trying to scoop with a driver could cause all sorts of a mess. Driver is the only club I’ve never really had any trouble with. I dunno ...just seems so much easier not having to worry about the damn hosel. I just swing hard and hit it.
