We're playing this course for the first time next week.  I've been wanting to try this course for some time after having heard about it last year.  I would have never guessed such a course in Anaconda, MT.  We'll likely play the copper tees.  644 yards from the "slag" tee's... yeah, right.  What would you expect to shoot on this type course?

Yeah it’s a nice course. Haven’t played it but it was on the list of course dismayed to play when I went to MT last year. Just didn’t get to it.

I would likely play from Limestone tees, though I could probably manage the Cooper tees due to elevation. I would likely shoot mid 90s here based on my HI.

Well, we hit the weather break just right.  It's been a wet spring here in southwest MT and, up until midday on Tuesday, we weren't certain we'd be playing - but play we did.  Old Works is a really cool setting whose design uses leftover topography from the Anaconda Mining Co. copper days.  Much of the hillsides still have remnant mining equipment and remaining portions of structures used during that time.  A unique feature are the jet black sand traps which are generously used throughout the course.  It's darn easy to see your ball made the trap from a distance - they stick out like a lightbulb. Instead of ruff along a few holes, long length traps skirt portions of the fairway.  A creek is used as the primary water hazard; running along lengths of a few holes and guarding  couple of approach shots.  There is also a small lake that brings water into play for a few holes.  All in all, it wasn't as difficult a layout as I had thought.  We really liked it and have scheduled a round for next week.

Now for the results.  95 for me and 105 for my buddy, playing from the copper tees. Neither of us were playing very consistent and now that we've seen where the problem areas are and have a feel for greens, I hope we can give the place a better run for its money next time.

I would play the gold tees and i would shoot a 78 with a triple bogey on 18. πŸ˜‰

I f I played it a second time, I'd play the slag tees and get the "I survived ..." tee shirt.

Well, last week it was $54 for green fees, cart, access to range/practice areas, and either breakfast or lunch.  That is a non-peak season rate for MT residents.  It's a great deal for this caliber course. This week, we paid $65 with cart and range but no grub (peak season started 6/25).

I asked my playing partner if he wanted to have a go at a couple of the slag tees and he politely said no thanks. A few in particular were much longer and set back in narrow windows. GIR for us from the copper tees was challenging enough; for sure if we had to hit from the ruff.  Compared to other courses I play, my GIR was down 50+%, and we had nice weather conditions both rounds (wind can and does blow in southwest MT).
