Spent some time on the practice green today, trying different grips from differing distances, in sets of 20.

At the more distant ranges I found that my standard overlap (not reverse) grip worked best, as this is what i've always used , and I'm probably used to relying on my right arm for distance control.

However, at the 2 closest ranges, ~3 and ~5 feet, I got better results with the cross handed grip. The feel was very awkward (and results poor at 5 feet) with uphill putts, but were much better (with very good results) downhill. Perhaps I'd need to practice more and adapt to it to manage uphill better. Either way, it did seem the cross handed putting grip lent itself very well to puts that didn't need to be struck very hard.

Has anybody adopted a combination of grips (or methods) for putts of different distances? is it a bad idea to try and do so?

When I was really struggling with my putting last year, I started putting right hand only from inside about 7'. The reason for this was I used to aim something like 4° right so on short putts I would push everything. Putting with only my right hand on the putter allowed me to "release" the putter better and close the face. I don't have that problem anymore since I got fit for my putter, but it helped at the time.

Anyway, I don't see anything wrong with using different grips if it gives you confidence and possibly better control.

    • Day 58: night putting session for about an hour. Started with lag putting and ended with putts inside 9’. I need to work on putts from 6-12’, but in a solid spot overall.
    • Birdied a different #6 today (incidentally, also a par-5, but not the same one on which I previously birdied).  Here's the funny thing though:  it's the par-5 that caused me to post my "how do I avoid bogeys?" on par-5s recently.  So I guess I still haven't parred that hole.
    • Day 20, May 24.  Played 18 today, very poor ball driving.  One GIR, and it was a 4-wood from the rough.  Several other instances of hitting a green on a full swing (and at least one full swing motion -- a 50% UW) that wasn't for GIR.   Still shot an 87 and even had a birdie (chip-in).
    • Welcome to TST.  I spent a bit of time in the UK but I had to look up Wagon Wheels.  Don't think I ever saw them.  Had to Google to see.  Couple similar items in US but Google says they are different. 😁
