Has anyone tried the new Ben Hogan irons ?. They look pretty nice. Direct ordered from the factory for about 1/2 price.  I thin that it would be confusing with the lofts on the head instead of the standard 4-PW symbols, but I read somewhere that they are going to discontinue that practice due to the confusion it causes.  I noticed that they no longer have the chrome Ft. Worth set advertised on their web site, just the black ones. I've been thinking about getting a set if i happen to come into some extra money. Any thoughts?

Thanks

I have seen them advertised on TV and just checked out their website.

Pretty slick irons are those FT Worth black ones.  Now you got me interested in them!

Play some lotto so you can try them first but make sure to let me know how they played.

I think the lofts on the head would only take a few rounds to get use to.

These are mine- A bit biased but I love them. However, I've only been able to get in about 3 rounds in with them along with some range work. working on the swing at the same time, so it's taking a bit to fine tune them into my game.

Now- as I mentioned on another forum, these are NOT your run of the mill GI or SGI clubs. The heads themselves are nearly 10% smaller than my previous set and missing the sweetspot is not your friend. If you tend to be off center a lot with GI/SGI clubs, these are NOT the clubs for you. While they stress their "progressive perimeter weighting" in their copy, they play like you would think blades play. Miss and it hurts accuracy and distance, there is very little if any 'correction'. But I will add that if you are a consistent sweet spot (generally) hitter, then you can play these- even as the hdcp goes up to low to mid teens, it can be done. And hitting the spot is like butter when done right. Lofts are not particularly strong, probably closer to a "retro loft" with a 34* 7 Iron. All other lofts are based on a 4* spread among the set.

I played original Edges for many years, then a set of Ft. Worth Edges from several years back and was thrilled when they came back "without the middle man". I was able to actually afford a premium set without waiting a couple of years for prices to drop on a leftover set. Blade style technology hasn't really changed over the years so the tech will be sound for awhile.

Again- if you are consistent- give their demo program a try and see if they are for you.

Plus- they look gorgeous...

Thinks, guys. I used to hit blades a long time ago (That was all anybody made back then). for the last 20 years i have been hitting mid-size cavity backs (Tommy Armour Forged Silverbacks). I thank the Hogan FTx model would be more in my line.

    • I'm not sure you're calculating the number of strokes you would need to give correctly. The way I figure it, a 6.9 index golfer playing from tees that are rated 70.8/126 would have a course handicap of 6. A 20-index golfer playing from tees that are rated 64/106 would have a course handicap of 11. Therefore, based on the example above, assuming this is the same golf course and these index & slope numbers are based on the different tees, you should only have to give 5 strokes (or one stroke on the five most difficult holes if match play) not 6. Regardless, I get your point...the average golfer has no understanding of how the system works and trying to explain it to people, who haven't bothered to read the documentation provided by either the USGA or the R&A, is hopeless. In any case, I think the WHS as it currently is, does the best job possible of leveling the playing field and I think most golfers (obviously, based on the back & forth on this thread, not all golfers) at least comprehend that.

    • Yes it's true in a large sample like a tournament a bunch of 20 handicaps shouldn't get 13 strokes more than you. One of them will have a day and win. But two on one, the 7 handicap is going to cover those 13 strokes the vast majority of the time. 20 handicaps are shit players. With super high variance and a very asymmetrical distribution of scores. Yes they shoot 85 every once in a while. But they shoot 110 way more often. A 7 handicap's equivalent is shooting 74 every once in a while but... 86 way more often?
