I'm not familiar with that spreadsheet, but I've always liked the separation value concept.

Bill may have been joking about working on trouble shots, but I work on those quite a bit and I believe he does as well.

Even players like you and I have the ability to learn how to punch a shot with just enough curve to leave us in a better position than by just punching out sideways. If that skill can help me get 20 or 30 yards closer on my next shot without much risk, it's worth developing.

Pretty much, you rate how well you performed each shot and one of the two things I did best was, as you so astutely said, it's a skill which it's hard to mess up which, by my estimate, the the worst we can do is find ourselves in a similar position, an acceptable shot is chipping out to the side, and a good shot is moving forward.

That’s not really how you use that form.

Whatever shot you choose, rate how well you execute it.

Is that a way of saying don't be results oriented?

No. The result might include luck or something, too.

And, for the purposes of the chart, it's how well you execute (the result is a big part of that, just not all of it). For example, if you hit a driver really thin but the fairway is baked out and the ball rolls out to 270 yards… that's probably a 1. Meanwhile a ball you hit solidly, with good height and speed, which catches a little ridge in the fairway and bounces/rolls into the right rough might be a 2 or a 3.

Mostly what I've been doing is looking at trends.  If something is way out of whack, like my short-game and putting was at the start of summer, I use that as a sign to practice it more, due to it being a glaring weakness.  Otherwise I'm at 65/20/15.

I don't really practice different stock full game shots that much.  I will usually practice primarily with 6-iron or so, and will hit a few wedges and a few woods to make sure I'm not only able to hit a mid-iron.  I also hit a few drivers at the range.  But in a bucket of 30, it's probably 2-3 punch shots, 2-3 woods, 2-3 wedges, and the rest are 6-iron.

The only other thing I grab from it is what type of putts to practice:  am I working on short putts or distance control?

Exactly. Your lack of arsenal speaks to weakness in the skill. If you're short sided with a bunker to carry with the green sloping away from you, the only chance to hit it close is to flop it. What if you can't hit a flop? You're likely not hitting it close.

Yes, that does have a lot to do with it.

Even though you may have been using this as a general example, you have described my short game perfectly.
