I've been Playing Golf for: 10 years

My current handicap index or average score is: 95
My typical ball flight is: draw/hook
The shot I hate or the "miss" I'm trying to reduce/eliminate is: snap hook

I started the season off great from the tee. Hitting a stiff shaft driver anywhere between 250-280 depending on if center contact or not, I would say a 90mph or so swing speed. The last 2 months have been a struggle. I hit about 2 fairways with the other 12 drives hitting snap hooks. The ball only gets about 10’ off the ground hooks severely left and dives down hard and rolls forever. Probably 75 yards in the air and 50 yards of roll. This leaves me 250+ in on most par 4ths and really hurting my scores.

Today I hit this snap hook for the first 12 tee shots but hit 2 great drives about 290 down the center to finish the last 2 holes (only 2 I birdied or parred all day).

i had my buddy record one of the shots in slow motion to try and figure out what I’m doing wrong. At first I though my club head was too far in front of my hands at impact and a closed club face but after reviewing the video below I don’t think that’s the case.

I know I have a lot of head movement but everything else looks ok to me. I’m shifting my weight from back to front, fully extending, keeping the club head far from my body, and good wrist hinge. I have no idea how this swing is preducing a shot that is going 150 yards with snap hook ball flight. This video the ball went about 10’ high for about 75 yards immediately turning left then dive bombed to the ground, landed in the left fairway and rolled about 50 or so yards and into the left rough.

Any thoughts on why I snap hook? I even have tried to slice and still hook!

You probably hook because you hit out a bunch.

Sorry for the beginner question here, but can you describe what you mean by hitting out?

You swing to the right.

Now you have two things to read. 🙂

    • A bit of background. The Southern California Golf Association (SCGA) runs an annual event known as "Team Play." It is a wildly popular match play competition where Men's Clubs across the region put together teams of 20+ golfers together to compete against other clubs in a 16 vs. 16 match. In any given year, approximately 80-100 clubs will participate. Each club is grouped into "pods" of 4, and will play 6 total matches - one home and one away match against the other 3 clubs. The winning club from each pod advances to the Team Play Playoffs - a single elimination format - until a winner is crowned.  Antelope Valley Country Club just advanced to the championship match for the 3rd consecutive year. They won the championship in both 2022 and 2023.  Based on my review of the match history from the past 3 years (linked below), they have won 21 consecutive team matches. Keep in mind, these are handicapped matches, so this is not just a case where a group of sticks bands together to dominate the poor amateurs other SoCal clubs. Even if these guys are grinders who never quit, play their best under pressure and routinely putt the lights out, the law of averages still say that a streak of that nature is mathematically impossible.  Is there any plausible explanation beyond institutionalized sandbagging throughout the club? • Interesting that Scottie is #10 on the all time money list and he's been on the PGAT for 4 years. Of course, purses are bigger now, but  neat to look at non-the-less.  The list of top 18 money winners in PGA Tour history has plenty of surprises This list is updated through the 2024 RBC Heritage. To add, Scottie won 4.5 million at the Players, Jack played 44 seasons and won a little of 5 million on course.
    • 43 (6 over) Couple bogies, couple Pars, a birdie and no doubles. Not bad for first 9 of the year.

Squat when I stand back up I lift the kettlebell up over and behind my head and hold then repeat
