Google earth is free and useful. I am not sure if any of the yardage apps have any sort functionality similar to viewing the course by aerial imagery.

That would be a cool app if you could get the course layout with your club carry distance overlaid.

Ultimately GamePlanning is a pretty straightforward, easy thing to get nearly perfectly correct every time you play golf. Once you know the right way to do it, anyway.

The challenge in golf has always been and remains actually pulling off good shots.

I use Golfshot on my iPhone.  It has a Course Flyover view.  It doesn't give elevation changes, but for me  it's a place to start to see the layout:
