I am in the beginning stages of planning a trip to Nebraska this coming Summer to play the Top Courses You Can Play in Nebraska according to Golfweek Magazine.  I have done the same thing in Florida in 2016 playing 30 different courses and in 2017 in South Carolina playing 11/15 of the top courses.   The list does NOT include private courses like Sand Hills.

The list of 5 courses is below, I am looking for any thoughts on things to do, places to stay and your experience in playing these courses.  I will start by flying into Omaha and then heading out...playing the courses as follows

  • Quarry Oaks, Ashland
  • Wild Horse, Gothenburg
  • Prairie Club (Dunes) Valentine
  • Prairie Club (Pines) Valentine  and then the par 3 course (Horse)
  • Tatanka Golf Club, Niorbrara

Then heading back to Omaha....

Any suggestions from those that have gotten to play Sand Hills or Dismal River how to get on these courses??

I have played both courses at the Prairie Club.   actually, a couple times each.   They are excellent courses.   The lodging is very nice.   Also, the green fees are for unlimited golf.   So, going 36 is same price as 18.

Only downside is that the course is half private/half public.   So, for example, Monday, Wednesday, Friday, Sunday the Dunes course is private and you wont be able to play it.  and then Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday the Pines course will be private.   So if you want to play both courses, you have to stay for two days.

Other than that, great facility, great practice area, great courses.   Though, it is way up north in the Sand hills.  maybe 30 min from South Dakota or so.

Also, the Horse Course is great fun if you are with buddies.   It's not layed out in any sort of order.  There's a bunch of different tee areas and a bunch of different greens.   But, there is no rule on which tee goes to which green.   So, you just play it like a game of H-O-R-S-E in basketball.   whoever won the last hole picks where you shoot next.  (hence the name, Horse Course).

    • Day 16: range night! Worked on long game for about 40 minutes, with a good solid 20 minute focus on my priority piece. Things improving there. Bookended that with some wedge and driver work. Finished up with about 30 minutes of short game. Working on distance control and all types of shots and lies. Short game is probably as good as it has ever been.
    • You should be able to install it yourself, honestly. You could easily blow it on and use some one-sided duct tape or something so it stays in place. That's what I've done with one of my grips.
    • Day 22 (12 July 26) - worked on putting tempo today using metronome for accurate tempo.
    • Hi all, My Edel putter seems to have developed a rattle.  I don't think it's a big deal, as I mostly hear it when I'm tapping down ball marks on greens.  However, I am debating getting it fixed, especially as I intend to play a lot of golf in August and September, and to continue playing regularly after that of course too.  My issue is I think fixing it would entail the fixer (golf shop repair station?) removing the grip and, presumably, applying a new one.  My problem is two-fold.   First, I like the grip on it, although after eleven years, maybe it's worth replacing.   The bigger (second) issue is getting the grip.  I don't like the flat-fronted putter grips anymore.  I have the round one on my putter, and I suppose I could buy one from Edel's website, but would a golf shop install a grip I bought elsewhere and brought in?  Or could they order one if Edel is not a supplier of theirs?  I don't recall ever seeing any Edel products in a Roger Dunn or PGA Superstore, although the era when I would go to a store and browse has long since ended (for better or worse).  I'd also wonder what the timetable is, as I'm leaving for a seven week trip in under three weeks. Any suggestions on what to do would be very welcome, whether about the rattle or the grip, together or independently.  Thank you!
    • I'm glad to know that picking up grass and letting it go doesn't help.  It felt like it shouldn't, but I'm glad to hear there's a good reason why.  It makes sense that wind is different higher up than it is near the surface. For a while, I was in the habit of checking the prevailing wind direction before playing.  That helped if I wasn't sure.  However, I still am not really sure whether something is a 5% wind or a 10% wind (and, of course, I know that a "helping" wind helps about half as much as the same wind hurting).   One of these days, I'll learn how to figure out what to do differently if the prevailing wind is 10mph vs 20 mph.
